Gerace

Gerace is situated in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, the westernmost and largest of the five provinces which make up the southern region of Calabria. The town sits atop a rocky hill near the town of Locri. Gerace is probably best known for its Norman hilltop castle, which is featured prominently in the video. According to legend, the town was founded in the 9th century AD by people fleeing a Saracen attack.

Secondo l’antica leggenda, gli abitanti di Locri Epizefiri, colpiti dalla malaria e dalle incursioni arabe sulla costa, lasciarono la città seguendo il volo di uno sparviero che si posò su un alto sperone roccioso. Il volatile, chiamato jerax in greco, permise così la fondazione della città di Gerace. Come per ogni centro calabrese che si rispetti, mito e leggenda si mescolano a storia e realtà: il centro fu fondato dai locresi nell’VIII sec. d.C., ma, secondo una tesi, il nome significherebbe vetta sacra (jerà akis). Altri studiosi la fanno risalire invece a Santa Ciriaca (Aghia Kiriakì), il cui culto era molto diffuso in epoca bizantina. E proprio bizantina è la struttura originaria della Città Alta: un castron fortificato difeso da più cinte murarie ad anello, intervallate da dodici porte.
