Drones Over Macedonia

In this 2020 highlight reel by AirVuz contributor feki.m90, you'll be treated to some excellent drone footage from the Southeast European country of Macedonia.  At the :06 mark, you'll fly over the statue of Alexander the Great in the capital city of Skopje.  At around the :20 mark, you'll see Kopzjak lake, a giant reservoir in the western part of the country.   Other featured locations include the Šar Mountains, wintertime on the Popova Šapka (home of one the country's most well-known ski resorts), Mavrovo National Park, and more. 

Check out this stunning drone tour of the Southeast European nation of Macedonia, the southernmost of the six sovereign countries to emerge from former Yugoslav Federation.  The video opens with a shot of the pier of the city of Ohrid on the lake of the same name, one of the largest and deepest lakes in Europe.  Next stop is the famous Church of St. John at Kaneo, located on a cliff overlooking the lake.  At about the :45 mark, you'll see the Monastery of Saint Naum.  You'll also get some nice views of the country's highland and lowland landscapes.    

Top contributor Minglam put together this awesome aerial tour of the two most well-known areas of the Balkan nation of Macedonia.  The first part of the video is shot around Lake Ohrid, the large lake which forms part of the border with Albania to the west.  The lake is not only spectacularly beautiful but it's dotted with many sites of cultural interest, also shown in the video.  The film then transitions to Skopje, Macedonia's capital city, which lies in a valley in the northern part of the country.

Check out this fascinating drone video of the Macedonian capital city of Skopje, compliments of contributor and pilot Betim Berisha.  The largest city of this Southeast European country, it's located in its northern region.  Skopje is situated on the Vardar River, along one of the most important historical routes connecting Greece to the rest of the Balkan Peninsula.  The home of some of the oldest inhabited areas of Europe, Skopje has been an important town in the region since the Antiquity.  

Lake Ohrid is one of the most spectacular bits of natural scenery in the Balkans.  One of the largest lakes in the region, it forms part of the border between Macedonia and Albania.  Lake Ohrid is one of a handful of UNESCO World Heritage sites to be designated as both a natural and cultural site.  In this video, top contributor and drone pilot Uncle Damn gives us a bird's eye view of the area around the city of Ohrid on the lake's northeastern shore, one of the most popular destinations on this deep, crystal blue lake.

Check out these drone views of the Sharr (Šar) Mountains in the Southeast European country of Macedonia, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot feki.m90.  The range runs on a roughly north-south axis, from the semi-autonomous Republic of Kosovo down through northwestern Macedonia into northeastern Serbia at their southern end.  The Macedonian portion of the range includes their highest peak: Titov Vrv, which has a summit elevation of just over 9k ft. above seal level or around 2.85k meters.  

While it is not as prominent as the Alps or Pyrenees Mountains, the mountains of Macedonia in the Balkan region of Southeastern Europe offer spectacular skiing opportunities.  Most of the country is covered in steep hills and mountains, with the greatest concentrations in its northwestern and southern regions.  Contributor and pilot Stojan2s created this epic drone video from a ski trip to the Galicica National Park ski area, situated in the soutwestern corner of the country near the famous Lake Ohrid.  

Here's a nice aerial view of a well-known canyon in the Southeast European country of Macedonia (also called North Macedonia).  It's called Matka Canyon, and it's located just to the west of the Macedonian capital city of Skopje.  The area is perhaps best known for its ten caves, as well as its  large artificial lake, numerous hiking trails, and ancient monasteries.  Matka Canyon is one of the most popular attractions in this former (and comparatively little-known) member of the now-dissolved Yugoslav Federation.  

Seen in this drone video by new AirVuz contributor and pilot feki.m90, the Macedonian capital city of Skopje appeared to be a ghost town during the Covid-19 worldwide pandemic in the Spring of 2020.   Macedonia (sometimes called North Macedonia) confirmed its first novel coronavirus infection on February 26, by a traveler who had returned from Italy.  A State of Emergency was declared on March 18; by the middle of April, the small Southeast European country had reported over 1,000 cases and dozens of deaths;   

The Šar Mountains of Southeastern Europe extend from northeastern Albania to the east, forming the natural boundary between the country of Macedonia and the  partially-recognized state of Kosovo.  In this drone video by new AirVuz contributor bedribushi, you'll get an aerial view of two of the more prominent mountains of the Šar: Macedonia's Black Peak and Kobilica Peak.  The former is the slightly taller of the two; its summit elevation is just under 2.6k meters above sea level (just under 8.5k ft.).  

Lake Ohrid forms part of the border between the countries of Albania and Macedonia in Southeastern Europe.  Between 1200 and 600 BC, the lake was home to a civilization which built on a platform anchored to the lake bed with thousands of piles.  This rather fascinating bit of history was undercovered as part of an archaeological expedition in the late 1990s.  In this drone video by contributor and pilot ilieskispire, you'll get an aerial view of this so-called "Gulf of Bones" on the Macedonian side of the lake.  

Top contributor Uncle Damn took an amazing dronie shot from an important monument in his home country of Macedonia.  It's called the Ilinden (or, variously, the Makedonium), and was completed in 1974.  It's situated in Kruševo, near the center of the country, which has the distinction of being Macedonia's highest town.  The monument is related to the anniversaries of two important events in the country's history, one in the early 20th century and another during its Nazi occupation in World War II.  

Check out this fantastic backwards-facing "dronie" shot over a large lake in the Southeast European country of Macedonia, compliments of AirVuz contributor feki.m90.  It was filmed overlooking Kopzjak, the country's largest artificial lake.  It's located in the western part of the country, between the mountain of Suva Gora and the Jansen Reserve.  The lake runs about 32 km in length (around 20 mi.), and is up to 400 meters wide (about 1.3k ft.).  It reaches a depth of almost 130 meters or about 430 ft.   

Check out this beautiful aerial video of the central square of Skopje, Macedonia, compliments of contributor and drone pilot afterdaark.  Macedonia Square is in many respects the cultural heart of the country, which was part of the Yugoslav Federation until that country dissolved in the early 1990's.  The centerpiece of the square is a giant statue of Alexander the Great, the most famous of all Macedonians.  Erected in 2011, the statue stands 24 meters (about 80 ft.) above the city's streets.  

For a first upload to AirVuz, new contributor Silvadesignco brings us this excellent drone video of the city of Ohrid in the Southeast European country of Macedonia.  Ohrid is the largest city on its namesake lake, which sits in the southwestern part of the country and is shared with Albania.  Home to a bit over 40k inhabitants as of 2019, Ohrid once housed 365 churches and was sometimes called the "Jerusalem of the Balkans."  One of the top tourist destination in Macedonia, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site.   

For a first upload to AirVuz, brand-new contributor lensagency brings us this excellent drone video from the Southeast European country of Macedonia. Opening with a shot of a giant rock formation on one of the country's many mountains, the video will then take you over the Matka Canyon, just southwest of the capital, Skopje.  At about the 2:35 mark, you'll see the odd-looking white structure known as the Makedonium; located in the Kruševo, it commemorates the Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising, a revolt against Ottoman rule in 1903.  

Take a tour of the city of Skopje in Macedonia, compliments of contributor David.Haring.  The video opens with a shot of the Archaeological Museum of Macedonia along the Varda River.  At the :20 mark, you'll get a view of Macedonia Square and its Alexander the Great Statue, perhaps the country's best-known cultural site.  After a stop at Matka Canyon (just west of the city), you'll head to the Skopje Fortress (also known as Kale), a defensive fortification which dates to the 6th century AD and is part of the Skopje Old City.

AirVuz contributor and pilot feki.m90 brings us this fantastic drone video from the Sharr (Šar) Mountains in Macedonia, one of the republics which at one point formed part of Yugoslavia.  The mountains, which have peaks of up to about 9k ft. above sea level (around 2.75k meters), are roughly split between the semi-autonomous Republic of Kosovo and the northwestern corner of Macedonia, with a small portion extending southward into Albania.    The mountains are home to some of the most beautiful alpine scenery in the Balkans region.  

Top AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Uncle Damn was hired to provide aerial video services for the European Wildwater Canoeing Championship in Matka, Macedonia. Representatives from the host nation as well as from Germany, France, Italy, the UK, and several other nations were on hand.  His drone video of the event provides a bird's eye view of some world class kayaking, as well as some great aerial views of Macedonia, a small Southeast European country and former member of the Yugoslave Confederation.  .
