Helsinki is the capital of and the most important city in the Scandinavian country of Finland.  The city, which hosted the 1952 Summer Olympics, sits on the Gulf of Finland, which connects to the Baltic Sea.  Like a number of other northern European cities, Helsinki has long been considered one of the world's most liveable cities, with many awards to that effect.  Contributor DavidfromHelsinki used his DJI Mavic Pro drone to create an amazing aerial video of this important Baltic Sea seaport city, host of the 1952 Summer Olympics.

eCKsplorer...

Former Drone Video of the Week Finalist eCKsplorer used a DJI Air 2 to create this excellent aerial view of a sea fortress which once guarded the approaches to Helsinki, Finland.  It's called Suomenlinna, and it's built on a series of islands which lie just to the south of central Helsinki in the Gulf of Finland, an inlet of the Baltic Sea.  The fortress was originally constructed in the 18th century when Finland was controlled by Sweden; it subequently fell under Russian control prior to Finland's declaration of independence in 1917.

Former Drone Video of the Week Winner Richard Beresford Harris brings us this stunning drone video from Finland's Nuuksio National Park, one of the country's great national treasures.  Located about 20 mi (around 30 km) northwest of central Helsinki, the park covers portions of three different municipalities: Espoo, Kirkkonummi and Vihti.  An outdoor enthusiasts' haven, it features thousands of acres of forests and hundreds of lakes, eight marked hiking trails, and almost 20 mi. Richard Be...

Drone Video of the Week Finalist Richard Beresford Harris brings us this outstanding drone video from Helsinki, Finland.  The video was filmed over the district of Eira, which lies just to the south of the center of the city.  With a population of only about a thousand, it's one of the pricier neighborhoods in the Finnish capital city.  First developed in the early 20th century, the district takes its name from a hospital which is actually located in the neighboring district of Ullanlinna, which lies to its west.

Lauttasaari Island

Richard Be...

Former Drone Video of the Week Winner Richard Beresford Harris brings us this stunning drone video of the Finnish island of Lauttasaari, which is part of Helsinki.  Located just a few mi./km west of the city center in the Gulf of Finland, Lauttasaari has a population of about 23k.  While its name translates to "ferry island", the island is now connected to Helsinki as well as Espoo (to the west) via bridges and causeways.  Its development is quite recent by European standards; as recently as World War II it was essentially uninhabited.

Helsinki's Old Town

Vanhakaupunki, The old city of Helsinki.

Riband Kur...

When it was founded in the mid-16th century, the Finnish city of Helsinki was originally located at the mouth of the Vantaa River.  Due to a fire and a plague outbreak, it moved to its current location, about 7 km (around 4 mi.) to the south, at the tip of the Vironniemi Peninsula.  The original Helsinki site is called Vanhakaupunki, which translates to "old town" in reference to its history.  Seen here in this drone video by Riband Kurd, Vanhakaupunki is now a district within the (now much larger) Finnish capital city.
