In 1580, the fortress was a key position held by the Irish during the Second Desmond Rebellion, which sought to overthrow the English rule of the island. On Easter of that year, English forces successfully besieged the fortress and killing all of its defenders, crushing the rebellion which had been led by Gerald FitzGerald, 15th Earl of Desmond.
