Coatzacoalcos is located on the Bay of Campeche (the southern section of the Gulf of Mexico) in the state of Veracruz. It's situated on the estuary of the river of the same name, primarily on its western (left) bank. Coatzacoalcos is the center of a metropolitan area of about 350k, making it the third-largest city in Veracruz after the city of Veracruz and the state capital, Xalapa.
