'In 1903, near Serooskerke, the port of Schelphoek was built to drain sugar beet from the polder Schouwen. In the following years a number of houses were built around this port, after which a neighborhood was created. During the water shortage and dike breakthrough of 1953, the neighborhood is not resistant to the storm and the water: it completely disappears.
The dike breakthrough has never been restored, and around the resulting water party a ring dike has been created, along which many olive wedges grow. This water basin has also been used as a port for the construction of the Oosterscheldekering.'
