Masada is an ancient fortification built atop a plateau in the Judean Desert of southern Israel, overlooking the Dead Sea.  During the First Jewish War of the first century AD, Masada was the site of a famous seige by Roman troops following which the Jewish defenders committed mass suicide en masse rather than surrender.  Contributor Nelly Volkovich used a drone to create an amazing aerial video of this hallowed mountaintop, which is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site.

Contributor and drone pilot Eminorcks created this spectacular aerial video of one of the great fortresses of Europe.  The Alhambra of Granada lies in the province of the same name, one of the eight which make up the Andalusia region of Southern Spain.  It is the site of one of the more notable historical events of the second millennium AD: in 1492, Spain's King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella gave the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus the go-ahead for his first great voyage.

The spectacular medieval Srebrenik Fortress lies in the northeastern corner of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe.  While the fortress was abandoned shortly after being built in the 14th century, it is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in all of Europe.  Contributor Tamas Vargas used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this amazing video, which begins with a selfie and then reveals the mighty fortification.

Some of the world's most impressive fortresses are located in the mountain passes of Europe which separated different kingdoms.  Among the greatest of these is Fort Fenestrelle in northwestern Italy.  It was built in what was then the Kingdom of Savoy to guard the approaches to the great city of Turin in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy.  Contributor Maxfrompine used a DJI Mavic Pro to create this epic aerial tour of this landmark, the largest alpine fortress in Europe.

Rumeli Fortress sits on the European side of the Straits of Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey.  Rumeli played a critical role in the seige of the city then known as Constantinople by forces under Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, who overwhelmed it after a 53 day seige in 1453.  The sack of what was then the world's largest city marked the end of the Byzantine Empire (the formal successor to the Roman Empire) and is considered one of the most important historical events of the Middle Ages.

Contributor Seppiolone brings us this epic drone video of the Rocca di Calasco, a fortress in the Appenine Mountains of Central Italy.  The core of the structure dates to the 10th century.  It is situated in the Province of L'Aquila, which is near the geographic center of Italy in its Abruzzo region.  The fortification sits at an altitude of just under 1.5k meters (a little under 5k ft), making it the highest fortress in the Appenine range which runs through the middle of the "boot" of Italy.

Top contributor Freeway Prod used a DJI Inspire 2 drone to create this stunning aerial video of the Citadel de Sisteron, a very well known fortification in the foothills of the French Alps.  The town of Sisteron is located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, which is just to the south of the Hautes-Alpes department in the heart of the French Alps.  The citadel was built to take advantage of Sisteron's strategic location in the middle of a gap between two mountain ridges.

Contributor NGreyTravels used a DJI drone to create this remarkable aerial video of one of the world's most famous hilltop structures.  The Sigiriya ("Lion Rock") is a gigantic rock fortress and monastery complex located near the center of Sri Lanka, the island nation off the southern coast of India.  The fortress was built in the 5th century AD as a new capital city by Kashyapa I, a long-serving king of Sri Lanka.  It was later converted to a monastery, which was active until the 14th century.

San Juan is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, sitting on the northern coast of the country.  It was one of the oldest European settlements in the Western Hemisphere.  Due to its strategic importance, the most prominent landmarks in the city are a series of fortresses built by the Spanish to defend their prize territory.  In this video, contributor Sikview used a DJI drone to create this unforgettable aerial tour of the San Felipe fortress, one of the original fortifications.

The Dominican Republic's Fortaleza Ozama was one of the first fortresses built by the Spanish conquistadoras.  It was constructed in 1502 to protect the city of Santo Domingo on the south shore of the island, which was the first permanently settled colonial outpost in the New World.  Contributor Moises_Arias used a drone to create this spectacular bird's eye view of the fortress overlooking the Caribbean, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Thecastlehunter created this magnificent drone video of one of the great Scottish fortresses.  Dunnotar Castle is a ruined medieval fortification in Aberdeenshire, dating to the seventh century AD and possibly earlier. Dunnotar has been extremely important throughout Scottish history, notably being the place where the Scottish Crown Jewels were placed for safekeeping during the English Civil War.  More recently, it was used as a filming location for the 1996 movie Hamlet.

PJFDrone created this spectacular drone video of one of the most famous fortresses in Spain.  The Castle of Jadraque is situated in the Guadalajara province of north-central Spain, which is part of the Castile-La Mancha autonomous region.  It is is a strategic region of the country, in effect controlling the approaches to the Castile & Leon region.  Sometimes called the Castle of Cid, it played a key role in the expulsion of Spain's Muslim rulers by the Kingdom of Castile.

Contributor and drone pilot Alex Avsharov created this magnificent drone video of a famous Armenian fortress.  Amberd (which translates roughly to "fortress in the clouds" is in the Aragatsotn Province, which covers the west-central portion of this Caucasus republic.  The fortification was built in the 7th century AD.  The fortress played a key role in the centuries-long struggles between the Turks, Armenians, and Mongols, although it was abandoned in the 13th century.

Conwy Castle is one of the most famous fortresses in Wales.  It's situated in a town of the same name, on the north coast. It was built by King Edward I of England during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1289. The castle was constructed as part of a wider project to create the walled town of Conwy.  Contributor Joshua Paul Gardner used a DJI Mavic Pro drone and a GoPro ground camera to create this video showing this important medieval landmark from a bird's eye view.

Contributor Shazar created this amazing drone video of one of the world's largest fortresses.  Ranikot Fort is located in the state of Sindh in southern Pakistan.  The location is was known to be fortified as early as the Antiquity.  The current fortress structure dates to the 16th century.  The fortress walls run a total of 32 km (about 20 mi), making it the largest fortress in the world measured by interior space.  The fortress came under control of the British Empire in the 18th century.

Near the town of Split lies the medieval Klis Fortress, which was built in ancient times and later became the seat of many kings of Croatia.  Perched over Split, the view of this fortification is spectacular, as you will see from this amazing drone video by contributor Justin Poore which he made using his DJI Mavic Pro drone.  The fortress was one of many sites in Croatia to chosen as filming locations for HBO's Game of Thrones; it appears as the City of Meereen in Slaver's Bay in Season 4.

During the 16th century, the then-mighty Kingdom of Portugal constructed a series of fortresses along the banks of the Tagus River estuary to protect its capital city Lisbon from its main vulnerability - seaborne invasion.  The most important of these was the Fort of São Julião da Barra, which is located on a promontory on the northern bank of the river's final outlet.  DroneCascais used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create a spectacular bird's eye view great fort, which was completed in 1568.

The fortress town of Briançon in the French Alps bears a number of distinctions.  First of all, it is the highest town in France with at least 2,000 inhabitants.  Second, its strategic position relative to a key mountain pass made it one of the most heavily fortified cities in Europe after the current structures were built in the 17th century to protect against invasion from the (then) Holy Roman Empire.  Famously, the town withstood a long seige in 1815, near the end of the Napoleonic Wars.

Situated on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, Fort Marlborough was one of the most important defensive British fortifications during the Colonial Era.  It was built in the early 18th century by the British East India Company, which was largely responsible for creating the British Empire in Asia.  Thereafter, until the dissolution of the Empire after World War II, Fort Marlborough was considered the strongest British fortification in southern/southeastern Asia after its fortress in Madras, India.

Contributor Hittheroadlat used his drone to create a stunning video of the Kastellet fortress in Copenhagen, Denmark's largest and capital city.  The fortress was initially completed in 1626 and later fortified during the course of the country's long periods of conflict with its neighbor Sweden.  With the aerial perspective provided by the drone, one can discern the star shape of this fortress, one of the best-preserved fortifications with this design.

Contributor AVEA - Alta Vistic Epic Aerial created this marvelous drone video of a famous fortress in northern Wales.  Harlech Castle is situated within Snowdonia National Park in Gwynned County.  It was built by King Edward I during his conquest of Wales in the late 13th century.  During the War of the Roses in the 15th century, Harlech was the site of a famous seige by Yorkist forces which ended in a Lancastrian surrender in 1468.  It's known as the longest seige in British history.

Contributor Alin Constantin used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this stunning aerial video of the Rupea Citadel, a Romanian fort and the site of some of the oldest archaelogical remains in Europe.  It's in the southeastern corner of Transylvania, near a pass in the Carpathian Mountains that define the eastern and southern boundaries of the Transylvanian Plateau.  While the fortress dates to Roman times, artifacts excavated at the site date to as long ago as 5500 BC.

Mikel_julio used a DJI Mavic Pro Platinum to create this memorable aerial video of one of the best preserved fortresses in Spain.  The New Castle of Manzanares el Real is a 15th century fortified palace which is near the town of the same name in the Madrid Community in the center of the country.  The fortress, which was used as a shooting location for the 1961 film El Cid starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren, now houses a museum.

Jodhpur is an important city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, the westernmost city in that state which lies close to the Indian border with Pakistan.  Jodhpur is surrounded by the Thar Desert.  It is perhaps best known for Mehrangarh, a giant 15th century fortress which overlooks the city.  In this video, NGrey captures a woman practicing yoga against the distinctive blue buildings of the skyline of the city, which was the shooting location for the 2012 film Dark Knight Rises.

Castro de Santa Trega is a famous fort in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain.  The fort dates to Roman times, and occupies a strategic position on the mountain bearing the same name.  It was occupied for roughly two hundred years, between 100 BC and 100 AD.  The site is also home to some rock-carving which may pre-date the fortress by thousand of years.  Contributor Diego_Al_Al used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this aerial video of the fort, one of Galicia's most popular tourist spots.

India's Drones Company works throughout the state of Rajasthan in northern India. This video is a collection of drone footage from around the state which was put together for a tour company interested in showing off the region.  The highlight of the reel is some epic bird's eye footage of the great fortification and palace complex called Amer.  Located just a few km/mi from the state capital of Jaipur, this magnificent structure is one of a series of famous hill forts around Rajisthan.

Παλαμήδι is the Greek word for Palamidi, the fortress built by the Venetians in the Peloponnese region during their second occupation of Greece. The fortress is made of stone and was completed in 1714. Unfortunately for the Ventians, the Turks captured the fortress only a year later and occupied it for nearly a century until the Greeks took it, and their country, back in 1822. Sphereview does a marvelous job showcasing the centuries-old fortress in this aerial video.

Here's a bird's eye view of an important fortress in the northern Netherlands, near the German border, compliments of Wout.  Bourtange Fortress is near the city of Groningen, the largest city in the northern Dutch province of the same name. It was completed in the late 16th century, during the course of the long fight for Dutch independence from Spain called the Eighty Years War.  The star-shaped fort was situated here to cover a road between Groningen and northwestern Germany.

Contributor Taleporos created this aerial view of an Ottoman fortress on the Greek island of Crete.  Izzedin was built on Souda Bay in 1872, during the waning days of the Ottoman Empire.  It moved to prison use during Crete's brief period as an independent country in the early 20th century, and it continued to be used as a prison once Crete became part of Greece in 1908.  Over the next several decades, it became notorious as a detention center for political prisoners.  T

Contributor and drone pilot Maikl_rus created this beautiful drone video of one of the most well known fortresses in the Caucasus rebublic of Georgia.  Khertvisi is situated in the Meskheti region in the south central part of the country, along a traditional invasion route.  The site was home to a structure which was allegedly destroyed by Alexander the Great.  The current structure was built in the 14th century and served a military purpose until well into the 19th century.

Here's a bird's eye view of one of the most famous forts of southern India, compliments of contributor and drone pilot manofmysore.  The Manjarabad Fort was built in the late 18th century for the ruler of Mysore, a kingdom which covered much of South India prior to its absorption in the British Raj.  It's a star fort, a configuration which was imported from Europe by its French designers.  The fortress sits in the hills of the mountainous Chikmagalur District of the state of Karnataka.

Contributor Daniele Bolgia created this stunning drone video of Forte Vezzena in northern Italy.  It sits atop Mt. Vezzena, part of the Vicentine Prealps in the Trento province.  It was a key position in a string of fortifications constructed by Austria-Hungary in the years leading up to World War I, when the area was part of that empire.  Once Italy joined the conflict on the Allied side in 1915, the fort was under near-constant artillery bombardment.  Despite suffering significant damage, it never gave way.

Contributor NTG Drones created this beautiful drone's eye view of a fortress in the northern part of the Netherlands.   Pettelaarse Schans is a star shaped fort just south of 's-Hertogenbosch, one of the main city's of the Noord-Brabant region of the country.  Constructed in 1623, the fort was successfully beseiged by Dutch forces in 1629, during the latter part of the 80 Years War in which the Dutch won their independence from Imperial Spain.

Contributor JuliusComeau created this drone video of Fort Beauséjour, a fortress on the isthmus which connects the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.  It's a five sided star fort, built by the French, and eventually ceded to the British who renamed in Fort Cumberland.  It's situated on the Isthmus of Chignecto, which was an important strategic position during the struggles between Britain and France over the Canadian territories in the 18th century.

Here is an excellent drone video of a well known Bulgarian mountain fortress, compliments of contributor Danovski Air. Anevo Fortress is situated in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains in Plovdiv Province, in the middle of the country.  It was built in the early 12th century, in an area that has been inhabited since the Antiquity.  At one time, it had eight defensive towers.  For a time in the Middle Ages, the fortress was strong enough to be the center of a small mini-state that ruled over the region.
