While northern Italy is thought of as being covered in mountains, it's actually more accurate to say it's surrounded by mountains: specifically, various sub-ranges of the Alps and Apennines.  In between, there are large areas of plains, which are home to some of Italy's best farmland.  One of the most prominent is the great Lombardy Plain, which lies in the part of the region south of Milan.  You can see this very flat, fertile area from a bird's eye view, compliments of contributor and drone pilot Mark59.

Monte di Tremezzo is a well-known mountain in Italy's northern Lombardy region.  The peak is popular among climbers because it is relatively easy to climb and offers hikers stunning views of the lakes over to the High Alps. Monte Gabiga, also in Lombardy, Italy is ever-so-slightly smaller at only 1.7k meters (about 5.6k ft.) above sea level, but just as beautiful. Both surround the famous upscale resort area of Lake Como. You may never get to see these beautiful places for yourself, but you can see it by drone thanks to pilot Kpax.

Lake Maggiore is one of the largest lakes in the Alps region.  It forms part of the border between Italy and Switzerland and between the two Italian regions of Lombardy and Piedmont.  The lake is overlooked by some of the highest mountains of the range, including Mt. Rosa, Italy's tallest.  Famously, Lake Maggiore was featured in Ernest Hemingway's immortal World War I work, A Farewell to Arms (first published in 1929).  In the book, the two main characters use the lake to escape to the safety of neutral Switzerland.

(about 90 km) in the (northern) region of Lombardy (primarily in the province of Brescia).   With the River Oglio (a left-tributary of the River Po) running its length, it's one of the largest valleys in the Italian Alps.  In addition to its spectacular alpine scenery, the valley is also known for a complex of ancient rock drawings, which were created by a group of pre-Bronze Age natives called the Camunni.
