Turkey Home - The Ancient City of Perga from Above!

The ancient city of Perga lies in the Anatolia region of southern Turkey, just northeast of the regional capital Antalya.  The city is mentioned in the Bible as being the home of St. Paul at one time.  Contributor Turkey Home created an amazing drone video of this ancient Turkish city, which is situated between two important rivers in Anatolia.  The bird's eye views will show you why Perga is one of Turkey's biggest tourist attractions.

Israel , Masada

Masada is an ancient fortification built atop a plateau in the Judean Desert of southern Israel, overlooking the Dead Sea.  During the First Jewish War of the first century BC, Masada was the site of a famous seige by Roman troops following which the Jewish defenders committed mass suicide.  Contributor Nelly Volkovich used a drone to create an amazing aerial video of this hallowed mountaintop, which is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site.

Jerash is an ancient city in northwestern Jordan, near the country's border with neighboring Israel.  Like some cities in Israel and Lebanon, Jerash reflects a blend of historical Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures.  Award winning contributor Fabio Knoll used a drone to create an amazing aerial tour of this city, which was unearthed by archaeologists in the early 1800's.

Contributor Volovisione, one of the top drone piloting companies in Italy, treats us to a highly stylized aerial view of the great ruins of Rome's Colosseum.  It is the largest amphitheater which was ever constructed, and it's estimated it could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectactors.  The Colosseum was tied directly to the Seige of Jerusalem in 70 AD; the building was adorned with booty captured from the Temple of Jerusalem and built largely with captured slaves from that bloody campaign.

Amphitheatre of El Jem

The amphitheatre El Jem was built in 238 AD in Thysdrus, in a Roman province of Africa that is present-day El Djem, Tunisia. It is widely considered to be the best set of Roman ruins in all of Africa, and indeed in the entire world. Built for spectator events, and with estimated capacity of 35k, it is one of the biggest amphitheatres in the world. Top contributor Fabio Knoll used a drone to create an amazing aerial video of this site, which later served as a military fortress.

Stonehenge is a pre-historic monument in southern England.  The famous ring of stones, estimated to be 4-5,000 years old, is one of the most recognized and important cultural sites in the United Kingdom.  While their continues to be debate about the function and purpose of Stonehenge, there is no debate that it looks amazing from the air.  Contributor Mikee1554 does so beautifully in this amazing video.

Hadrian's Wall was an important fortification system in England during the antiquity.  It is located in Northumberland, the northernmost of the regions of the North of England.  The wall was constructed  during the second century AD as a defensive barrier against Scotland to the north.  In this video, contributor Ewan Hillier flies along the great wall, which marked the northernmost outpost of the Roman Empire on the island of Great Britain.

Aizanoi - Ancient Greek City in Kütahya

Aizanoi is an ancient city in the Kütahya province of western Turkey.  It was built by the Greeks and continued to be an important administrative center into Roman times.  Due to its well preserved ruins of a temple and a stadium complex, the city has been submitted to UNESCO for designation as a World Heritage site.  In this Drone Video of the Week nominee, contributor Iskenderfilm gives us a bird's eye view of this ancient city.

Garni temple Armenia

Contributor Johny Kondakjian Photography used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this spectacular video of the Temple of Garni, one of Armenia's cultural treasures.  It is the country's only standing temple dating to the period before Armenia converted to Christianity in 301 AD.  Believed to have been built in the first century, it collapsed in an earthquake in the 17th century, and was excavated and rebuilt in the 20th century.

Mardin (Heritage City)

Contributor jesus_tr used a DJI Spark drone to create this stunning aerial video of Mardin, a city in southeastern Turkey.  Mardin is the capital of the province of the same name, in Turkey's Southeastern Anatolia region.  The city lies just a short distance north of the Syrian border.  The city has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and was part of two different Assyrian empires.  Most of its prominent architecture dates to its time under a Turkmen dynasty in the 11th-12th centuries.

Ale's Stones Sweden - Drone Video

In the Scania region of southern Sweden is Ales's Stones, the largest surviving ancient stone monument built in the shape of a ship.  It's estimated that the monument was built between 1.5k-5.5k years, ago, and the exact purposes of this and other similar ancient monuments in the region are still a mystery.    Contributor FBAerial flew a drone over these ancient ruins to produce this impressive aerial video of the site.

Anfiteatro Campano - Santa Maria Capua Vetere

Less well known than Rome's Colosseum, the Capua Ampitheater in Santa Maria Capua Vetere (ancient Capua) was the second largest Roman amphitheater.  The town is situated due north of Naples, in Italy's Caserta province.  Built in the first century BC, the amphitheater was the scene of many important events in the Roman Republic and the Empire.  In this video, contributor feola.mike captures these ancient ruins brilliantly with a DJI Phantom 4 drone.

Turkish aerial videographer and contributor Alp Karagulle brought his drone to the ancient Greek city of Ephesus which is located on the coast of Ionia on Turkey's Mediterranean Sea coast. The city, which was built in the 10th century BC, is one of the world's most well-preserved ancient metropolises.  It is particularly known for being the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Contributor and drone pilot georgelek1966 used a drone to give us this bird's eye view of an ancient temple on the Greek island of Aegina.  The temple of Aphaia was built in the fifth century BC on this island, which is one of the Saronic Islands in the Saronic Gulf, which is part of the Aegean Sea.  Aphaia was a Greek goddess, worshipped exclusively at this site, who was thought to be important to fertility as well as to the crop growing cycle.

Ephesus - Virgin Mary - Selcuk

The House of the Virgin Mary is near the location of the ancient Greek city of Ephesus, outside of Selçuk, Turkey.  These famous ruins, which are considered to be both a Catholic and Muslim shrine, were discovered in the 19th century and believed by many to the home of the Virgin Mary in the last years of your life.  Videographer Jesus_tr filmed this modest but important shrine in this beautiful drone video.  Ephesus is part of the Izmir Province on Turkey's western (Aegean) coast.

Templi di Paestum - Poseidonia - Cilento National Park, Italy

Contributor Franxifra created this amazing aerial video of Templi dei Paestum, one of the most significant ruins sites of Southern Italy.  Paestrum was an ancient city built by the Greeks in what is now the Salerno province of Campania.  The core of the site is three very well preserved temples, two of which (the Hera temples) are shown in the video.  The temples are believed to have been built sometime between 500-600 BC, and relate to a Doric order which is distinguished by the design of the column tops.

Pantalica: Sicily Before History

Sicily is not only the largest island in the Mediterranean, it's also one of the oldest in terms of human settlement.  Archaelogists believe that it may have been settled as long as 12,000 years ago, long before most areas of Europe.  In this video, contributor armandoWDN gives us an aerial tour of Patalica, an area in the southeast corner of the island, near Syracuse.  Pantalica is the site of the Necropolis, a cemetery which is thought to hold as many as 5,000 graves.

Somerset aerial - Tor of Glastonbury, Cheddar gorge, Stonehenge

Contributor ForAdun brings us this beautiful aerial tour of some of the most important sights of two counties in southwestern England.  The video opens with a beautiful view of the 4-5,000 year old ruins of Stonehenge in County Wiltshire.  From there it moves to Cheddar Gorge in neighboring County Somerset, the site of Britain's oldest human skeleton.  The video wraps up with some epic footage of Glastonbury Tor (also in Somerset), an iconic hill atop which sits St. Michael's Tower.
