The proud South American country of Colombia is known to offer diversity on many fronts.  Culturally influenced by its population's European, African and indigenous origins, it offers major cities like Bogota and Medellin plus a wide variety of terrain, from mountains to beaches to rainforests.  Drone pilot @joeygranath filmed it all in this energetic short video, which was selected as a Drone Video of the Week winner in October 2018.

The Secrets of Tequendama


Tequendama Falls is a waterfall on the Bogota River near Bogota, Colombia.  Standing roughly 130 meters (about 430 feet) tall, the falls is one of the largest in South America or indeed anywhere in the world.  Unusually, the falls runs completely dry in certain months of the year.  Drone contributor La.drones, a Bogota native, flew his drone above these magnificent falls to create an aerial perspective, of the falls, which unfortunately have been chosen by many suicide victims.

Medellin is the second largest city in Colombia, and the capital of the Antioquia region which occupies a northern section of the country.  Like most South American cities, it was founded in the 16th century by Spanish conquerors.  It sits atop numerous lists of the best cities in South America.  In this video, contributor Unraveled Studios was able to fly a drone over Medellin during the approach of a major thunderstorm over the surrounding mountains.

Santander, Colombia - Chicamocha Canyon


The Chicamocha Canyon was created by the Chicamocha River in north central Colombia, in the Santander and Boyaca provinces.  With a maximum depth of 2k meters (about 6k ft) Chicamocha Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon.  Contributor Scienceoftravel used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create an amazing aerial view of this spectacular piece of South American geology, one of Colombia's top tourist attractions.

Watch this spectacular drone video by Sarmientodanielph, and you'll see why Piedras de Suesca is one of Colombia's most popular spots for rock climbers and other outdoors-seekers.  It's located on a high plain about an hour's drive north of the capital Bogota.  Its rock cliffs make for some great climbing opportunities, and its fast moving rivers and streams offer some great spots for kayakers.  Take in the landscape, which also offers some incredible deep shades of green.

Contributor Sarmientodanielph created this beautiful drone video from a spot very near to the exact geographic center of Colombia.  The town is called Guatavita, and it's in the Guavia province in the middle of the country.  This area is part of a broad plateau formed by the different parts of the Colombian Andes.  In the video you'll see the centerpiece of the area, Tomine Reservoir, which supports some of the hydroelectric projects in the areas and also supplies drinking water to Bogota.

Sanctuario de Nuestra Señora de Las Lajas


If you find yourself adventuring through the southwest canyon in Colombia where the Guitara River flows below,  and happen upon the basilica known as, Las Lajas Sanctuary — brace yourself for complete awe. Contributor la.drones shares stunning aerial footage of this architectural wonder in its natural habitat in this drone video.  It was inspired by two women who saw an image of the Virgin in 1754, but wasn't completed for 200 years.  It is considered one of the finest churches in the world.

Check out this amazing dronie from atop one of the world's most famous rocks.  The Rock of Guatape (El Peñón de Guatapé) is an inselberg (isolated rock formation) in northwestern Colombia, not far from Medellin.  It rises 200 meters (about 650 ft.) from the base, and is stunningly prominent in the flat terrain in this part of the country.  The top of the rock wasn't scaled (at least officially) until the 1950's.  Now it is accesslble by a staircase which runs up one of its sides.

In this poignant film, Alejandrogutierrezlonga flies over the still-standing historic ruins of Gramalote, Colombia, abandoned after devastating mudslides and floods. The somber footage captures the dignity of the once beautiful structures that have, at least for now, escaped total destruction. The city is located in the northeastern state of North Santander.

Cartagena is located on the north (Caribbean) coast of Colombia.  It's a major shipping port and Colombia's fifth largest city.  Cartagena was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, and went on to become the largest seaport in the once-mighty Spanish Empire.  In this video, contributor Alta Vista Epic Aerials used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create an amazing aerial view of this walled South American city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Behold this amazing drone video of one of Colombia's most active volcanoes, compliments of top contributor la.drones.  Volcán de Puracé is located in the Puracé National Natural Park, in the western part of this South American country.  The stratovolcano is part of the Cordillera Central, one of the sub-ranges of the Andes which run through Colombia.  Standing over 4.6k meters (just over 15.2k ft.) the volcano has exploded many times in modern history, most recently in 1977.

Check out this amazing drone video of an ancient ruins site in South America known as the "Stonehenge of Colombia".  El Infiernito is lcoated near Villa de Leyva, a town in the Boyacá Department northeast of Bogota.  The name ("Little Hell") derives from the Spanish explorers who conquered the area (although they didn't discover this site) who thought that there were diabolical pagan rituals afoot here.  It's believed that the site was used for ritual bathing as well as rudimentary astronomical observation.

Colombia is crossed by three sub-ranges of the Andes, which run roughly parallel on a southwest-to-northwest axis. The westernmost of these is the Cordillera Occidental range, whose peaks reach a height of about 4.1k meters (around 13.5k ft.). In this drone video by contributor AVEA (Alta Vista Epic Aerials), you'll get a bird's eye view of Salento and La Carbonera, two of the towns which sit in the midst of this range which is also known as the West Andes.
