Contributor Naim sh brings us this amazing drone video of some spectacular rock formations in the Libyan desert.  The Acacus Mountains begin at Ghat in the country's southwestern corner (near the Algerian border) and extend northward, forming part of the Sahara Desert.  The rock formations you'll see in the video host some of the world's most well known pre-historic cave art.   With paintings that are as old as 14 millennia, the area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. 



Fabio Knoll

Wadi Rum is a desert valley lying in the southern portion of Jordan.  Occupied since ancient times, the area is home to some of the most spectacular rock formations anywhere on earth.  For this reason, it was chosen as the primary shooting location for the legendary 1962 Columbia Pictures film Lawrence of Arabia.  Award winning contributor Fabio Knoll flew his drone over the Wadi Rum, and the aerial view is nothing short of astounding.  


Meteora Flight


Meteora is a spectacular rock formation in the Thessaly region of north-central Greece.  These immense pillars represent a geological phenomenon which is essentially unique in the world.  A group of monasteries were built on the pillars, six of which remain standing today. Contributor Rickrayfilms treats us to a spectacular aerial tour of the area, which is considered second in importance only to the Holy Mountain of Athos in its importance to Eastern Orthodoxy.

Capadoccia is a major city and tourist destination in Turkey's Central Anatolia region.  It is known around the world for its "Fairy Tale" rock formations.  These are giant pillars of rock formed by unusual deposition and erosion patterns in this area of Central Anatolia, near the middle of Turkey.  In this video, contributor Turkey Home treats us to an incredibe aerial tour of Cappadocia and its amazing geology, unlike any other in the world.  


La Piedra del Peñol


The Rock of Guatape, also known as the Stone of El Penol (Piedra del Penol) is an enormous inselberg (isolated rock) near the towns of Guatape and El Penol in northern Colombia, near the city of Medellin.  One of the most recognized sites of Colombia, tourists can climb the 740 steps to reach a viewing area at the summit.  Contributor la.drones used his drone to create this stunning aerial view of the mighty rock.  


The Bastei, a rock formation in Germany


Contributor Koorosh used a DJI Phantom 4 drone to create this spectacular aerial video of one of the most impressive rock formations in Germany.  The Bastei is situated in the state of Saxony in what had been East Germany prior to reunification.  The tops of the rocks are almost 200 meters (over 650 ft.) above the Elbe River, in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.  The Bastei are one of the major outdoor tourist attractions in eastern Germany, easily accessible from nearby Dresden.


The Pulpit Rock

The Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) is a major tourist attraction of Rogaland in the southwestern corner of Norway. The top of the rock, which is roughly 600 meters (2000 ft) above the base, is essentially a flat table from which tourists can view the Lysefjord fjord, one of Norway's biggest attractions.  Top contributor Grim Berge used a drone to treat us to a spectacular aerial view of this magnificent rock, the shooting location for a key scene in one of the Mission Impossible movies.

The Babinda Boulders form a natural pool where three streams come together in the Cairns Region on the northern coast of Queensland, the northeastern state of Australia.  Because of the fast-moving currents running over the rocks, the site is sometimes referred to as the Devil's Pool.  Contributor Y0shi flew a drone over the Babindas to create an amazing aerial video of one of the world's most distinctive looking rock formations.

AVEA - Alta Vista Epic Aerials

Old Harry Rocks sit off the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, England.  These giant chalk stones are one of the key sites along the Jurassic Coast, a 150 km (95 mi) stretch along England's South Coast which has been designated by UNESCO World Heritage Natural Site.  Contributor Alta Vista Epic Aerials flew a drone over Old Harry Rocks and created this stunning bird's eye view of this natural wonder, one of the most well known natural sights in the United Kingdom.


Petrified waterfalls (Hierve el Agua)


Contributor Postandfly created this spectacular drone video of one of the world's most unusual rock formations.  The Hierve el Agua (the "water boils") is a a set of formations that look very much like streams of cascading water.  Amazingly so, especially when viewed from an aerial perspective.  The pheonenon is caused by streams of spring water that are over-saturated with the mineral calcium carbonate.  They are located in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, in the southern region of the country.

Frame Hunters Media created this spectacular drone video of the Bucegi Mountains in central Romania.  They are part of the Southern Carpathians, which form the dividing line between Wallachia (the core of modern Romania) and Transylvania to its north.  Their highest peak, Mt. Omu, is one of the tallest in Romania with an elevation of 2.5k meters 9about 8.3k ft).  The Bucegi's are known in part for their spectacular rock formations, caused by extensive wind and rain erosion.

In this video, PK Productions flies his DJI Phantom 4 Professional drone over Moab Canyon in southern Utah. The canyon is known for its gigantic rock formations.  The other-worldly look of the canyon, and its resemblance in places to the Grand Canyon, have made it one of the go-to spots for movie shooting locations.  Among the well known movies which had scenes shot in Moab Canyon are Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Thelma & Louise.

Top contributor Fabio Knoll created this epic drone video of a spectacular geological site called Pedra Grande (translated: Big Rock) in Brazil's state of Sao Paulo.  It's near a town called Atibaia, which is situated due north of the Sao Paulo state capital (of the same name, which is also Brazil's largest city).  Set amongst rolling verdant hills, the exposed face of Pedra Grande makes for some compelling viewing, especially seen from an aerial point of view! 



MDM Drone Studio

MDM Drone Studio flew a drone over the Prachov Rocks in the Hradec Králové Region of Bohemia in the north central Czech Republic.  The result is a stunning bird's eye view of some of the most unusual rock formations in all of Europe.  Here one can find gigantic, spectacular looking rocks with names such as Devil's Kitchen, Leaning Tower, the Elephant, and the Monk.  The sandstone rocks sit on what had at one point been a large plateau.

Drábské světničky is a ruin of a 13th century rock castle in Mladá Boleslav District, in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic.  While the castle is impressive, the limestone rock formations which surround it are simply stunning in their size and shape.  Contributor Ludoweet used a drone to create this marvelous aerial video of the castle and these amazing stone formations. 




Tsé Bitʼaʼí or "rock with wings" in Navajo is a monadnock, rising above the high-desert plains of the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mexico, United States. Shiprock has large religious and historical significance for the Navajo people and has been featured in several prominent movies and novels.  It's made up of what remains of the throat of a volcano and was probbably formed 2,500 - 3,000 feet below the Earth's surface, but has been exposed after millions of years of erosion. 


TORCAL de Antquera Málaga ,spain


Spain's Malaga province is situated along the country's southern Mediterranean coastline in its autonomous Andalusia region, just to the east of the Cadiz province.  The inland portions of Malaga include the Sierra del Torcal Mountains, a range which is known in part for its magnificent karst rock formations.  In this video, contributor Jonatan_Joy brings us an epic drone video of El Torcal de Antequera, a large nature reserve in these spectacular Andalusian mountains.  


Piramids of Stob


Parts of Bulgaria are home to some of Europe's most spectacular rock formations.  An example is the Pyramids of Stob, which are "hoodoos" or "fairy tale chimney" formations similar to those found in Turkey's Central Anatolia region.  They are located in the foothills of the Rila Mountain range, the highest sub-range of the Balkan Mountains.  In this video, you'll get a great bird's eye view of these magnificent structures, a product of some of the unique geology of Bulgaria.


Valley of the Monks


Contributor Postandfly gives us this drone's eye view of some of the most unusual rock formations on the planet.  It's called the Valley of the Monks, and it's in north-central Mexican state of Chihuahua.  The extreme conditions of the area turned what would have been ordinary looking sedimentary rocks into the fantastically shaped formations you see here.  The valley, which is also called the Valley of the Gods, is one of the most popular outdoor tourist attractions in northern Mexico.

The massive rock face he sits upon drops straight down into the mossy landscape below with a trickling waterfall flowing beside it. His aerial shots pan across to capture the Three Sisters sandstone formations that are one of the main distinctive features of the landscape in this Drone Video of the Week nominated video.


Raouche Rocks...


Contributor Media4Fun created this amazing aerial video of one of the most spectacular rock formations in the Middle East.  The Rock of Raouché (also known as Pigeon's Rock) is a giant stone formation which sits just off the coast of a Beirut neighborhood which is named for it.  It's one of the highlights of the famously beautiful Lebanese coastline.  The Raouché neighborhood of Beirut is one of its more upscale, and its cafes along the Avenue de Paris amongst the most well known in the city.

AVEA - Alta Vista Epic Aerials

AVEA - Alta Epic Aerials created this stunning drone video of one of a site which played a key part in one of France's greatest mysteries.  Étretat is a small community on Normandy's Atlantic Coast.  In May, 1927, a plane called the White Bird took off from Étretat bound for New York.   The plane, piloted by two famous French World War I aces, disappeared without a trace and has never been found.  They had been seeking the Orteig prize, which was awarded to the USA's Charles Lindbergh weeks later.

Contributor BestdayEver brightened our day with this amazing drone video of a famous rock formation on the island nation of Taiwan.  The Shen’ao Elephant Trunk Rock is situated on the coast of the Ruifang District of New Tapei City, the administrative area which covers much of northern Taiwan.  As you can see from the video, the name of the rock is quite appropriate - it really does resemble an elephant's trunk.  The rock and nearby fishing village lie beneath Mt. Shen'ao.


Montserrat - 2018 - 4K


DanDrone's vacation to Spain's Catalonia region with his DJI Mavic Pro drone yielded this epic aerial video of Montserrat, the sawtooth-topped mountain which lies just west of Barcelona.  This spectacular looking mountain has a modest altitude of 1.2k meters (4k ft) and is easily accessible by foot.  It is home to a famous Benedictine Abbey which is considered one of the possible sites of the semi-mythical Holy Grail.  


THE LIONS HIKE - Vancouver BC Canada

Seen from almost any point in Vancouver, the pointed peaks known as The Lions are a familiar landmark in British Columbia, Canada and have provided inspiration in the naming of the local CFL football team, as well as Lion's Gate Entertainment.   Although the hiking can be a bit risky up the east peak, they both remain popular spots for enthusiasts like Pasquale Josepe, who, fortunately for us, also packed his drone to capture his own adventure.  Watch it now to enjoy the beautiful aerial views he found!


Palca Canyon Bolivia


Bolivia's Palca Canyon is located near the capital city La Paz in the west central portion of this South American country.  The canyon is known for its stunning, multicolored rock formations.    Contributor JTurner flew his DJI Mavic Pro drone around this expansive canyon, providing us with a spectacular aerial tour of a little seen area of this landlocked nation in the Andes Mountains region.
