The republic of Latvia has a proud history dating to medieval times.  An independent country since the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, its capital city Riga is a well preserved port on the Baltic Sea.  Riga was a member of the Hanseatic League of Baltic port cities which dominated the trade of northern Europe during the Middle Ages, and the old city is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Drone pilot Chris Berg used his DJI Mavic Pro to create this stunning aerial tour of the country, most of which is shot in and around Riga.

Check out this beautiful aerial video of the Latvian countryside in Autumn, compliments of contributor and drone pilot Nils Sokolovs.  The Baltic republic, whose interior landscape consists mostly of forested and swampy lowlands, is known for its famous mists.  In the Fall months, the already-stunning landscape becomes a sea of colors, making for some of the best Autumn scenes in Europe.  The video does a marvelous job of capturing the astounding beauty of this ancient Eastern European land.

When the Soviet Union dissolved in the early 1990's, its Baltic states were among the earliest beneficiaries.  All three had enjoyed a period of independence between the World Wars, and had longstanding cultural and economic ties to Germany and other countries on the Baltic Sea.  Latvia's capital city Riga perhaps best exemplifies this  economic progress.  Here is a beautiful aerial tour of this dynamic and well-preserved city, compliments of content creator Audrey Semjonov and his DJI Mavic Pro drone.

The Great Latgale Adventure

Eaglewood Pictures

Latgale is one of Latvia's four officially recognized regions, along with Kurzeme, Vidzeme, and Zemgale.  It is unique amongst the four in having no Baltic Sea coastline.  Rather, it is a land of inland forests, lakes, and wetlands, similar in some respects to the inland parts of Finland.  Top contributor Eaglewood Films used a drone to provide a compelling aerial introduction to this region, which is comparatively more Russian-influenced than other parts of Latvia which have close historical ties to Poland and Germany.

Visit Jūrmala

Eaglewood Pictures

Eaglewood Films put together this amazing drone video of the Latvian beach town of Jūrmala.  Situated about a half-hour drive west of the capital city Riga, it's essentially a narrow strip of land between the Lielupe River and the Gulf of Riga, a southern extension of the Baltic.  During the 40+ years when the country was part of the Soviet Union, Jūrmala was a favored getaway for Nikita Kruschev and Leonid Brezhnev, who ruled the USSR for most of this period, as well as for legions of other high CP officials.

Latvia's Abava River flows through the Kurzeme region in the western part of the country.  In this video, contributor Eaglewood Films gives us an aerial view of the Abava River Valley, which forms part of the route of the historical road from Riga to the historical region of Prussia (once part of Germany, now largely part of Poland).  Prepare to be amazed by the bird's eye view of this area which helped to cement historical ties between Latvia and Northern Germany, ties which helped propel Latvia's economic boom in the post Soviet era.

Dviete Floodplains, Latvia

Eaglewood Pictures

The Dviete River is a tributary of the Daugava River in southeastern Latvia.  Occasionally, in years of heavy rainfall, the larger river (which is the most important waterway in this Eastern European country) backs up from the spring runoff.  When this happens, it turns the Dviete floodplains into a paradise for kayakers (as well as for birds of various species).  Contributor Eaglewood Films used a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone to capture this kayaking scene in one of the oldest parts of this Baltic Sea republic.

The town of Ikskile lies in the center of the Baltic republic of Latvia on the Daugava River, one of the country's principal waterways.  The most important historical and cultural landmark in the town is the Church of St. Meinhard, which was constructed in the 12th century.  In this video, contributor Jurgis Kreilis give us an aerial tour of the structure, which now sits on an island which was created by the reservoir of a hydroelectric plant constructed several decades ago during the Soviet era.

Contributor Reinis Vilnis brings us this amazing video of an unusual phenomenon - mountains of ice which pile up in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Latvia.  Using a drone combined with ground camera footage, he flies over and around these large, temporary hills that form in the Gulf of Riga.  In these semi-protected waters, the Baltic Sea will freeze in the depths of winter.  The shifting of ice near the shoreline causes massive breakups in which big chunks of broken form these amazing mini-mountains.

With its capital located at 57 degrees north latitude, the Baltic country Latvia basically freezes in the winter.  In particular, the country's inland rivers and lakes become covered with extremely thick layers of ice.  When spring comes, the waterways become giant traffic jams of floating chunks of ice, which can be sources of dangerous floods.  In this drone video by top contributor Jurgis Kreilis, you'll get a bird's eye view of this phenomenon on two river towns - Pļaviņas and Ogre.

Fields of gold - 4 Seasons of Latvia: Summer - Ep. 6

Jurgis Kreilis / FilmDay

Jurgis Kreilis / FilmDay continues his aerial series on the seasons of Latvia with this beautiful summer piece shot over some of the country's agricultural areas.  One of the distinctive features of the landscape in here is the interspersal of forested areas amongst the farms.  During the Soviet period, about a third of the country's cultivated land was abandoned and reverted to forest.  The resulting landscape is particularly striking in the summer months, when the colors of the fields contrast with the still-green trees.

Latvia sits at a very northerly latitude, which makes for some very long winters.  At the same time, the long winter months in this Baltic republic make for some incredible scenery.  The Baltic Sea freezes, but only partially so, and the freezing temperatures yield giant chunks of ice which float about and collide with each other and the shore.  In this drone video by top contributor Jurgis Kreilis / Film Day, you'll get a nice aerial tour of this frozen wintern wonderland including both its coastal and inland areas.
