HYPNOPOMPIA

Eaglewood ...

Top contributor Eaglewood created this stunningly beautiful video of the most iconic landscapes of the Eastern European country of Latvia: its wetlands.  Like the other two former Soviet Republics on the Baltic Sea (Lithuania and Estonia) much of the interior of the country is covered in marshes and swamps, a function of their position on the northern edge of the great East European Plain.    These provide not only some of Europe's most important bird sanctuaries but also scenes of intense natural beauty.

Daugava River: Church of Saint Meinhard

2:53

Isle of Saint Meinhard

Jurgis Kre...

The town of Ikskile lies in the center of the Baltic republic of Latvia on the Daugava River, one of the country's principal waterways.  The most important historical and cultural landmark in the town is the Church of St. Meinhard, which was constructed in the 12th century.  In this video, contributor Jurgis Kreilis give us an aerial tour of the structure, which now sits on an island which was created by the reservoir of a hydroelectric plant constructed several decades ago during the Soviet era.

Kurzeme: Abava River Valley

Raznas National Park

Jurgis Kre...

Latvia's Raznas National Park lies in the Latgale province, one of the four legally recognized regions of the Baltic republic.  In this video, contributor Jurgis Kreilis treats us to a bird's eye view of this national treasure in the southeastern corner of this former Soviet republic.  The park was created by the country's central government in 2007 as a means to preserve the natural beauty and wildlife of the area including the flora and fauna of Lake Razna, the second largest lake in the country.

Latgate: Latvia's Landlocked Province

2:23

The Great Latgale Adventure

Eaglewood ...

Latgale is one of Latvia's four officially recognized regions, along with Kurzeme, Vidzeme, and Zemgale.  It is unique amongst the four in having no Baltic Sea coastline.  Rather, it is a land of inland forests, lakes, and wetlands, similar in some respects to the inland parts of Finland.  Top contributor Eaglewood Films used a drone to provide a compelling aerial introduction to this region, which is comparatively more Russian-influenced than other parts of Latvia which have close historical ties to Poland and Germany.

Latvia's Migrant Birds

Bird Migrants in Latvia's Wetlands

Eaglewood ...

With some of the world's most pristine wetlands, Latvia becomes a veritable sea of birds during certain months.  The Baltic republic becomes a key stopover point when they fly from north to south in the spring, and again when the pattern reverses itself in the fall.  It's an awesome sight, complementing the stunning natural beauty of this small nation.  Using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone, contributor Eaglewood Films created an amazing video of the seemingly endless stream of migratory birds.

The Latvian Countryside in July

1:34

Countryside in Latvia

Nils Sokol...

AirVuz contributor and pilot Nils Sokolovs brings us this beautiful drone video from the countryside of Latvia, a small republic on the Baltic Sea.  Most of the country's interior is covered by the Great East European Plain.  Heavily forested and just above sea level, the nearly dead-flat countryside is often covered in a thin mist during the warmer months.   As you'll see from the video (which was shot in July), the combination of the flat landscape and the low-lying cloud-cover make for scenes of surreal beauty.

SE Latvia: Dviete Floodplains

3:01

Dviete Floodplains, Latvia

Eaglewood ...

The Dviete River is a tributary of the Daugava River in southeastern Latvia.  Occasionally, in years of heavy rainfall, the larger river (which is the most important waterway in this Eastern European country) backs up from the spring runoff.  When this happens, it turns the Dviete floodplains into a paradise for kayakers (as well as for birds of various species).  Contributor Eaglewood Films used a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone to capture this kayaking scene in one of the oldest parts of this Baltic Sea republic.

Latvia Winter Scenes

Moody Winter in Latvia

Jurgis Kre...

Top content creator and drone pilot Jurgis Kreilis, who was profiled in a segment of the Drone Dish, brings us this masterpiece of a video shot in his native Latvia in the depths of winter.  In his words, "to appreciate the beauty of the winter you don't necessarily need colorful sunrise, sunset or bright sunlight through the day. Winter can be insistent, surly and moody."  So true.  Prepare to be amazed by the winter aerial views of this magnificent Baltic land with its fog-covered lowlands and forests.

Latvian Forest and Lake

Autumn in Riga (4k)

Andrey Sem...

When the Soviet Union dissolved in the early 1990's, its Baltic states were among the earliest beneficiaries.  All three had enjoyed a period of independence between the World Wars, and had longstanding cultural and economic ties to Germany and other countries on the Baltic Sea.  Latvia's capital city Riga perhaps best exemplifies this  economic progress.  Here is a beautiful aerial tour of this dynamic and well-preserved city, compliments of content creator Audrey Semjonov and his DJI Mavic Pro drone.

Exploring Latvia's Ice Mountains with the DJI Mavic Air

Reinis Vil...

Contributor Reinis Vilnis brings us this amazing video of an unusual phenomenon - mountains of ice which pile up in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Latvia.  Using a drone combined with ground camera footage, he flies over and around these large, temporary hills that form in the Gulf of Riga.  In these semi-protected waters, the Baltic Sea will freeze in the depths of winter.  The shifting of ice near the shoreline causes massive breakups in which big chunks of broken form these amazing mini-mountains.

Riga Freeport; Port of Latvia

0:50

Riga Freeport by Mavic 2 Zoom

Reinis Vil...

Reinis Vilnis used a DJI Mavic Pro 2 Zoom to create this aerial tour of Riga Freeport, an important port on the Baltic Sea.  The capital and largest city of Latvia, Riga was one of the original Hanseatic League cities which dominated trade in Northern Europe for centuries.  It continues to serve an important transport function.  The largest by far of several ports in Riga, the Freeport primarily handles cargo (bulk and container) headed in and out of Russia and the other former Soviet Union states.

Latvia's Frozen Rivers

2:09

Ice Jam

Jurgis Kre...

With its capital located at 57 degrees north latitude, the Baltic country Latvia basically freezes in the winter.  In particular, the country's inland rivers and lakes become covered with extremely thick layers of ice.  When spring comes, the waterways become giant traffic jams of floating chunks of ice, which can be sources of dangerous floods.  In this drone video by top contributor Jurgis Kreilis, you'll get a bird's eye view of this phenomenon on two river towns - Pļaviņas and Ogre.

The East European Plain in Latvia

1:17

Foggy Morning in Latvia

Nils Sokol...

The surreal beauty of the interior of the Baltic republic of Latvia is revealed in this highly cinematic drone video by contributor Nils Sokolovs.  Away from its Baltic Sea Coastline, interior Latvia lies in the heart of the great East European Plain, which stretches from eastern Poland all the way to Russia's Ural Mountains.    Given the country's wet weather and extensive marshlands, the countryside here is known for the thick fog which develops and covers the flat, serene landscapes.

Winter Wonderland in Latvia

2:45

Winter Patterns

Jurgis Kre...

Latvia sits at a very northerly latitude, which makes for some very long winters.  At the same time, the long winter months in this Baltic republic make for some incredible scenery.  The Baltic Sea freezes, but only partially so, and the freezing temperatures yield giant chunks of ice which float about and collide with each other and the shore.  In this drone video by top contributor Jurgis Kreilis / Film Day, you'll get a nice aerial tour of this frozen winter wonderland including both its coastal and inland areas.

Bauska Castle in Fall

Visit Jūrmala

Eaglewood ...

Eaglewood Films put together this amazing drone video of the Latvian beach town of Jūrmala.  Situated about a half-hour drive west of the capital city Riga, it's essentially a narrow strip of land between the Lielupe River and the Gulf of Riga, a southern extension of the Baltic.  During the 40+ years when the country was part of the Soviet Union, Jūrmala was a favored getaway for Nikita Kruschev and Leonid Brezhnev, who ruled the USSR for most of this period, as well as for legions of other high CP officials.

Farms and Forests in Summer

2:04

Fields of gold - 4 Seasons of Latvia: Summer - Ep. 6

Jurgis Kre...

Jurgis Kreilis / FilmDay continues his aerial series on the seasons of Latvia with this beautiful summer piece shot over some of the country's agricultural areas.  One of the distinctive features of the landscape in here is the interspersal of forested areas amongst the farms.  During the Soviet period, about a third of the country's cultivated land was abandoned and reverted to forest.  The resulting landscape is particularly striking in the summer months, when the colors of the fields contrast with the still-green trees.

Mist-Covered Lakes and Ponds

2:06

Early Morning in Latvia

Nils Sokol...

The Baltic republic of Latvia has some of Europe's most beautiful lake landscapes.  Small in land area (around 64k square km or about 25k square mi.), it's home to thousands of lakes and ponds, in addition to an astounding 12k+ rivers and streams.  Set on the great East European Plain, these lake areas take on a stunning appearance in the morning hours of the warmer months, when much of the low-lying lands become covered in mist.  To see what we mean, check out this stunning drone video by Nils Sokolovs.

Latvia's Tallest Lighthouse

Shine the light

Eaglewood ...

Eaglewood Films created this drone video of Miķeļbāka, the tallest lighthouse in Latvia.  It lies on the south side of the main passageway that connects the Baltic Sea to the Gulf of Riga.  The original lighthouse here was built in 1884, but was damaged during World War I and later dismantled.  The second lighthouse was blown up by Soviet forces during the early months of the German invasion of the USSR in World War II.  The current structure, which stands 56 meters or about 180 ft., was built in 1957.

Misty Morning Swamplands
