Tears of Pele

Pele is the goddess of fire, volcanoes, and the creator of the Hawaiian Islands in Hawaiian religion. She is often refered to as Madam or TūTū Pele to show respect and is a very well-known deity in Hawaiian mythology. In this piece, haussmannvisuals captures the essence of Pele via the errupting Kilauea Volcano off the Big Island with his DJI Phantom 4 Pro and DJI Mavic Pro.  Like a true professional, he waited three years for this moment and made sure to fly in a legal fly zone - we thing his hard work definitely paid off in this Drone Video of the Week nominated video.

Breathtaking aerial view of Mount Bromo, East Java

Mount Bromo (Indonesian: Gunung Bromo), is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif, in East Java, Indonesia.  It is one of the most well known volcanos in the world, although at 2.3k meters (7.6k ft) it's not actually the tallest even in Indonesia.  The volcano has been extremely active over the last decade, with multiple eruptions over that period.  Contributor Nugroho Gito flew his drone over this geological marvel, which lies in Indonesia's Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Mt Etna 4K

Mt. Etna is an active volcano on the Italian island of Sicily, which sits right below the "boot" of mainland Italy and is the largest island in the Mediterranean sea.  Etna is in a virtually constant state of eruption.  It has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nations, and more recently as a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Using a DJI Mavic Pro drone, contributor Chris Berg created this stunning aerial video of the volcano, whose peak currently stands about 3.3k meters (just under 11k feet) above sea level.

Drones are giving us an up close look at some of the world’s oldest and most dangerous volcanoes.  In celebration of some of the best drone views of volcanoes the team at AirVūz compiled this video including views of Kanloan Volcano in the Philippines, Mount Batur in Indonesia, Piton de la Fournaise on Réunion Island,  Mount Sinabung in Indonesia, Cotopaxi in Ecuador, and Mount Bromo in Indonesia.

Around the Volcano

Reunion Island, a French territory, lies in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar.  The island was formed by two volcanos, one of which is still active.  As in, very active, with red-hot lava spewing about.  Top contributor Christian Cuvelier flew his drone over and around the mountain which dominates this tiny tropical paradise.  Prepare to be astounded by the bird's eye views of an active volcano.

Cotopaxi Volcano from Above/ highest active volcano in the world/ forbiden to climb.

Contributor Rufo_Adventure created an amazing drone video of Ecuador's Cotopaxi Volcano, one of the highest in the world.  The peak of the mountain stands at 5.9k meters (19.3k ft) above sea level.  He was able to take his drone on an expedition that reached the south summit of the mountain, in the process creating this stunning video of one of the highest peaks in the Western Hemisphere.

The awakening of Nature - Calbuco Volcano Eruption 2015

Contributor Mavdrone used a DJI drone to create this breathtaking video of the Calbuco Volcano, which lies along the Pacific coast of Chile in the region of Los Lagos.  Dormant since the early 1970's, the volcano erupted in 2015.  Contributor Mavdrone was able to fly a drone over the volcano as it was erupting at that time, creating a memorable aerial video of this geological beast in the heart of the Andes Mountains system.

Vanuatu & Nouvelle Calédonie from above

In the southwestern part of the South Pacific Island region, the most prominent groups of islands are Vanuatu and New Caledonia.  Vantuato is an independent nation, while New Caledonia remains a French dependency at least through 2018.  Contributor AirDroner created this epic aerial tour of these tropical islands, which includes footage of some of the still-active volcanoes which produced them.

Kanlaon Volcano(Canlaon)

Part of the Ring of Fire, Kanlaon is one of the most active volcano in the Philippines, with 30 eruptions in the last 200 years. It sits on the island of Negros.  From the waterfalls at the base, to the Margaja Valley caldera and rocky Lugud crater, the Canlaon volcano brings new meaning to the saying, "beautiful but deadly."  Contributor NAVA flew over the top of this marvel, creating one of the most-viewed drone videos on AirVuz.

Ijen is a complex of volcanoes lying on the eastern end of Java, the most populous of the 17k+ islands in the Indonesian archipelago.  The volcano is known for a highly unusual looking blue colored fire in one of the craters, which is due to the presence of sulphur.  Award winning aerial cinematographers Nava Visual Communication flew a drone over the various volcano craters, and seeing the aerial video is akin to taking a virtual hike on the road to Kawah Ijen.

Contributor and drone pilot B.FILMS - BANOR Jerome took some big risks and flew his drone over the volcanic eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise on September 15, 2018.  Situated on the French department's Reunion Island, located in the Indian Ocean, this volcano upholds the island's reputation for magmatic activity. Many tourists venture to the site of the Piton de la Fournaise in hope of seeing some hot lava action.

Volcanoes in France - Puy de Dôme

Yes, you read that correctly: volcanoes in France.  Puy de Dôme is an active volcanic dome in the Masif Central region, close to the middle of the country.  It's less than 11,000 years old, a newborn in geological terms.  Contributor Astropote used a drone and four spotters to fly over the crater of the great dome, which is about 200 meters (650 ft) across and 90 meters (300 ft.) deep.  Puy de Dôme is now one of the major tourist destinations in south-central France.

Lake Meke is a crater lake that was formed in south central Turkey when a volcano erupted 4 million years ago.  The inner crater of the lake was formed from a much more recent eruption about 9,000 years ago.  Now a registered natural monument of Turkey, it is situated in the Konya province of the country's Central Anatolia region.  This drone video by Orhan Karaman provides a clear view of the famous copper volcanic cone island and the two surrounding lakes.

Costa Rican drone pilot Flystudio CR gives us an amazing drone video of the active Irazu Volcano, situated in the middle of the country.  Using his drone, he gives us an amazing bird's eye view of the series of craters which sit atop the volcano, the highest in Costa Rica, which is situated in a national park.  On rare clear days, it is possible to see both the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east from the summit!

Located just off the toe of Italy, Sicily is home to Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world. The volcano is also the tallest mountain in Italy south of the Alps and is surrounded by the Etna National Park.  The rich volcanic soil around it makes for excellent grape growing, making it one of the islands great wine-producing regions. Droning a Volcano Eruption

Contributor and drone pilot AerialRhianna was able to aerially capture an eruption of Mt. Sinabung, in the north central part of the gigantic island of Sumatra in Indonesia.  After four centuries of dormancy, the volcano began erupting again in 2010.  This video was filmed during an eruption event in 2013, which casued the evacuation of almost 4,000 people.  There were further eruptions in 2014, and in 2016, an eruption killed seven people who were in the area.

Award winning contributor and drone pilot Fabio Knoll created this epic aerial look at Mt. Bromo, an active volcano in East Java, Indonesia.  Named after a Hindu god, the volcano is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.  The volcano has been in a state of eruption or near-eruption during much of the 21st century thus far, leading to numerous warnings and advisories.  Nevertheless, it continues to be one of the biggest tourist attractions in Java.

MIDDLEMOST ANDES OF ECUADOR

Qualico Drones gives us a marvelous view of a portion of the Andes Mountains in Central Ecuador.  The centerpiece of this is Mt. Chimborazo.  This volcanic mountain stands 6.3k meters (about 20.7k ft.) above sea level, making it the highest mountain in this South American country.  The mountain is part of the Cordillera Occidental range, which is a sub-range of the Andes.  The peak of this monster can be seen from Guayaquil, the capital city which lies 140 km (about 85 miles) away!

Many of Indonesia's volcanoes pose spectacular hiking opportunities.  With modest elevations, hiking to the tops of these "peaks" can yield spectacular views into their craters.  In this video, contributor DroneCult aerially filmed amazing hiking trips to Mt. Bromo and Ijen Crater, both of which are in East Java (the province which lies at the eastern end of the island of Java).  The latter of the two volcanoes is taller, with an elevation of about 2.8k (9.2k ft) above sea level.

Only a couple weeks before the volcanic eruption on Big Island in Hawaii, DRL and AirVūz sponsored pilot, Gab707, flew over the flowing lava before it erupted! Flying a quad above an active lava field ain't easy business.  He had to trek for hours through tough terrain, fight strong winds, and avoid steamy volcanic chimneys in order to share this drone footage with us.

Mud volcanoes

GeorgeMarcu used a DJI Phantom 4 drone to create this epic aerial video of the Berca Mud Volcanoes, one of the most well known natural sights in Romania.  They are located near the town of Berca, in the Wallachia (Muntenia) region of the country, roughly halfway between Brasov and the national capital Bucharest.  The structures actually aren't volcanoes; they are caused by saltwater and mud pushed up by gas eruptions thousands of meters/ft. below the surface.

Volcanoes are often more "hikeable" than other types of mountains; most of the world's highest volcano tops are accressible without climbing gear.  In thie video, you'll get a great drone view of an epic volcano hike in the Caribbean from contributor www.aerialnorway.com.  La Soufrière volcano is on the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  Follow along with the hikers and you'll get an even better view of the magnificent mountain, one of the tallest in the Eastern Caribbean.

Poas Volcano Costa Rica

Poas is a very active volcano in the center of the Central American nation of Costa Rica.  This volcano, which stands 2.7k meters (8.8k feet) tall, has been erupting with great frequency, most recently in April 2017.  FlyStudioCR flew a DJI Phantom 4 Professional drone about and over this volcano, which is closed to tourists since the most recent eruption due to safety concerns.
