The ancient city of Bagan is located in the Myanmar province of Mandalay, deep in the interior of the country.  Hundreds of years ago, Bagan was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, the precursor to modern-day Myanmar.  In this video, contributor NAVA uses a DJI Phantom 1 drone to give a bird's eye view of some of the Bagan region, a plains area which at one point was home to more than 10,000 Buddhist temples and pagodas.

Yangon, once known as Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar, once known as Burma.  Founded in the 11th century, the city was relatively unimportant until Great Britain colonized the region in the 19th century and made it the capital of British Burma.  The city is no longer the country's capital, which was moved to Naypyidaw.  In this video, contributor Alex Dyl gives us a bird's eye view of this Southeast Asian metropolis, home to approximately 8 million as of 2018.

Mandalay: Myanmar's Second City

Myanmar's second largest city after Yangon is Mandalay, which lies near the geographic center of the country.  Mandalay is a relatively young city, founded in the 19th century by the king of Burma (as Myanmar was once known).  Mandalay lost its status as a capital when Great Britain annexed the Burmese kingdom a few decades after the city was built.  This video will give you an aerial perspective of this stunningly beautiful city in the heart of the Burmese jungle.

Leni Sediva

Contributor Leni Sediva created an epic video of her travels in the central part of Myanmar.  Using a combination of drone (aerial) and ground footage, she takes us around the Mandalay region.  The highlight of the video is footage of the giant Mingun Temple, which was started in 1790 but never completed.  Had it been finished, it would have been the largest temple in the world.   It lies on the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar's most important waterway.

Welcome to the Shan State of Myanmar

Minzarni Tgi

Myanmar's Shan state occupies its eastern region, which sits just above northern Thailand.  It's named for the Shan people, a distinct ethnic group which also has some populations in other states of Myanmar and the neighboring countries.  The territory came under British control later than the rest of what was then called Burma, and the area's remoteness has made it hard for the Myanmar government to control it.  In this drone video you'll see the southern part of this beautiful state.

Inle Lake by drone - Myanmar - Burma

Leni Sediva

Contributor Leni Sediva used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this aerial view of Inle Lake in Myanmar.  Located in the Shan State which covers the eastern part of the country, Inle is the second largest lake in Myanmar.  As of 2015, it was designated as a World Network of Biosphere Reserves, Myanmar's first location in that grouping.  The people living around the extremely shallow lake constitute a unique ethnic grouping within Myanmar, called the Inthe.

Myanmar from the Sky, Part 3: The Sacred Plain of Bagan

In the middle of Myanmar, the Irrawaddy River makes a large bend which created a large area of plains.  On this fertile plain grew the Pagan Empire, one of the two main political forces in Southeast Asia in the 12th and 13th centuries (the other being the Khmer Rouge in present-day Cambodia).  During this time, it was home to literally thousands of Buddhist pagodas and temples.  See these Sacred Plains from above in this amazing drone video by Xavigator.
