6th Annual NYCDFF Dronie Nominee: la.drones

Dronies really are the perfect way to capture a moment. In the archetypal dronie shot, the view of the human subject gives way to a "reveal" of the (hopefully epic) shooting location.  It's a shot that literally was impossible before the advent of drones.  Pilot la.drones took this dronie while laying on a bridge that passes over the Caqueta River in Canon del Mandiyaco, located in the state of Cauca in southern Colombia. This video earned a nomination for the Dronie category at the 6th Annual NYCDFF.

Content creator and drone pilot La.drones was one of the first contributors in the AirVuz community, and his videos are amongst the best.  In this video, he compiled highlights of his best footage from his native Colombia.  The video brings out the astounding and diverse beauty of this giant South American country.   It's all here - its beautiful beaches, yawning canyons, lush rainforests, towering mountains, and massive cities.  This video was nominated as a Finalist for the Drone Video of the Week award in June of 2018.

Check out this amazing dronie from atop one of the world's most famous rocks, compliments of contributor shkundas.  The Rock of Guatape (El Peñón de Guatapé) is what's known as an inselberg (isolated rock formation) in northwestern Colombia.  It rises 200 meters (about 650 ft.) from the base, and is stunningly prominent in the flat terrain in this part of the country.  The top of the rock wasn't scaled (at least officially) until the 1950's.  Now it is accesslble by a staircase which runs up one of its sides.

Top contributor Daniel Molina used a DJI Mavic Air to create this magnificent aerial video of a beautiful spot on Colombia's Pacific coastline.  Bahia Solano is located in the Chocó Department, which occupies the northern part of Colombia's Pacific coast.  Chocó features some of Colombia's most beautiful scenery, but is also one of the poorest of the 32 departments which make up the country.   For reasons you'll understand when you see the video, Bahia Solano is an emerging beach destination.

Drone Video of the Week Winner el gringo rojo brings us this marvelous dronie shot from a well-known archaeological site in Colombia known as the Lost City (Ciudad Perdida).  Discovered only in 1972, it's located in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, an isolated mountain range (not connected to the Andes) in the northern part of the country.  The site consists of a series of mountain terraces, roads, and circular plazas.  It's believed to have been constructed around 800 AD, centuries before the more famous Machu Picchu site in Peru.

Tequendama Falls is a waterfall on the Bogota River near Bogota, the capital city of Colombia in South America.  Standing roughly 130 meters (about 430 feet) tall, the falls is one of the largest in South America or indeed anywhere in the world.  Unusually, the falls runs completely dry in certain months of the year.  Drone contributor La.drones, a Bogota native, flew his drone above these magnificent falls to create an aerial perspective, of the falls, which unfortunately have been chosen by many suicide victims.

For a second upload to AirVuz, contributor FSociety brings us this fantastic drone video from Colombia's Santander Department.   One of the 32 provinces of this large South American country, Santander is located in the north-central part of the country.  The video features footage of the colonial town of Barichara; the city of Bucaramanga, the provincial capital; the small towns of Curití, Pinchote, and Guane; and Chicamoca Canyon (Cañon del Chicamocha), which has a depth of over 6.6k ft. (2k meters) and is one of the world's largest.

Check out these marvelous drone views of northern Colombia, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot jm_photography.  He filmed the landscapes and seascapes of Atlántico, one of the 32 Departments (states) of this very large South American country.  One of the smallest Departments by land area, Atlántico is situated on the country's Caribbean Sea coastline, between the Bolívar Department to its west and the Magdalena Department to its east.  Most of the footage was filmed along the coastline, which is backed by a chain of mountains.

Colombia is crossed by three sub-ranges of the Andes Mountains, which run roughly parallel on a southwest-to-northwest axis. The westernmost of these is the Cordillera Occidental range, whose peaks reach a maximum elevation of about 4.1k meters (around 13.5k ft.) above sea level. In this drone video by contributor and pilot AVEA (Alta Vista Epic Aerials), you'll get a bird's eye view of Salento and La Carbonera, two of the towns which sit in the midst of this range which is also known as the West Andes.

Medellin is the second largest city in Colombia (after the capital city, Bogota), and the capital of the Antioquia region which occupies a northern section of the country.  Like most South American cities, Medellin was founded in the 16th century by Spanish conquerors.  It sits atop numerous lists of the best cities in South America.  In this video, contributor Unraveled Studios was able to fly a drone over Medellin during the approach of a major thunderstorm over the surrounding mountains.

The Chicamocha Canyon was created by the Chicamocha River in north central Colombia, in the Santander and Boyaca provinces.  With a maximum depth of 2k meters (about 6k ft) Chicamocha Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon.  Contributor Scienceoftravel used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create an amazing aerial view of this spectacular piece of South American geology, one of Colombia's top tourist attractions.  It's located about 55 km (around 35 mi.) from the provincial city of Santander.

In a land full of rainforests and mountains, mudslides and floodings are an all-too-common occurrence in Colombia. In this poignant film, Alejandrogutierrezlonga flies over the still-standing historic ruins of Gramalote, Colombia, abandoned after devastating mudslides and floods. The somber footage captures the dignity of the once beautiful structures that have, at least for now, escaped total destruction. The city is located in North Santander, one of the 32 departments (states) into which Colombia is divided.

Contributor AVEA - Alta Vista Epic A created this beautiful drone tour of Boyacá, one of the 32 departments which make up the country of Colombia.  Located northeast of Bogota, Boyacá lies within an Andes sub-range called the Cordillera Oriental.  Sometimes called the Eastern Range, the Cordillera Oriental is the easternmost of the three Andes sub-ranges which cross Colombia.  Boyacá played an important role in Colombia's 19th century war of independence from Spain.

Contributor Sarmientodanielph created this beautiful drone video from a spot very near to the exact geographic center of Colombia.  The town is called Guatavita, and it's in the Guavia province in the middle of this South American country.  This area is part of a broad plateau formed by the different parts of the Colombian Andes.  In the video you'll see the centerpiece of the area, Tomine Reservoir, which supports some of the hydroelectric projects in the areas and also supplies drinking water to Bogota.

Behold this amazing drone video of one of Colombia's most active volcanoes, compliments of top AirVuz contributor and pilot la.drones.  Volcán de Puracé is located in the Puracé National Natural Park, in the western part of this South American country.  The stratovolcano is part of the Cordillera Central, one of the sub-ranges of the Andes which run through Colombia.  Standing over 4.6k meters (just over 15.2k ft.) the volcano has exploded many times in modern history, most recently in 1977.

Prepare to be amazed by this stunning 4k drone video of Cartagena, Colombia, compliments of wyldandalive.  Situated on the country's Caribbean Sea coastline, it's Colombia's busiest seaport by freight volume.  During Colonial times, Cartagena was the Spanish Empire's most important port, and served as the conduit through which  silver extracted from South America was transported to Europe.  The video features excellent footage of San Felipe de Barajas Castle, a giant fortress erected by the Spanish shortly after founding the city in 1533.

Contributor and drone pilot thescienceoftravel brings us this beautiful aerial video of a spot which has the distinction of being the northernmost point of South America.  Punta Gallinas (Cape Hens) is located at the far end of the Guajira Peninsula, a land mass which juts out into the Caribbean Sea in a northeasterly direction.  It is the northernmost point of Colombia and also the entire continent.  It's so far north that the entirety of Central America's Panama and Costa Rica sit to its south!

The heart of Colombia's coffee-growing area is the Department (state) of Quindío.  The second-smallest of the country's 32 departments, it's located roughly in the middle of a triangle formed by Bogota, Medellin, and Cali - ie, Colombia's three largest cities.  Most of the state sits on the western slope of the Cordillera Central, the middle of the three Andes sub-ranges which run up and down the western half of the country.  In this drone video by AVEA - Alvista Epic Aerials, you'll see one of Quindío's famous coffee trails.

Contributor itskitman created this awesome drone video of one of the great natural wonders of Colombia: the Stone of El Penol (El Peñón de Guatapé), a gigantic rock formation known as an inselberg.  Guatapé is actually a town in the Antioquia Department in the northwestern part of the country.  The northern face of the rock has a staircase which travelers can scale to the 200 meter (just over 650 ft.) summit.  The video, which was a DVOW nominee, features footage of both the town and its famous rock.

Mompox, or Santa Cruz de Mompox, is a town in the Bolívar Department (state) of northern Colombia.  Seen here in this drone video by la.drones, Mompox dates to colonial times.  In 1812, it supplied the initial force of men for Simón Bolívar's in his campaign to liberate the South American continent from Spanish control.  Once primarily dedicated to cattle-raising, the town is now a significant tourist destination in northern Colombia and is known for its churches, some of which date to the 16th century.

Santa Marta Bay is an inlet of the Caribbean Sea in northern Colombia.  It's two most important cities are Baranquilla at its western mouth and Santa Marta at its eastern.  The former city is the largest in Colombia's Caribbean region, while the latter is Colombia's oldest city.  The bay is an important shipping center for this large South American country as well as an increasingly popular tourist destination.  Check out the beautiful bay from above in this drone video by new AirVuz contributor Drone Travels.

Contributor itskitman created this beautiful drone video of a charming resort on Colombia's Pacific coastline.  It's called the La Kuka, and it's located in the town of Nuquí.  The town is part of the department (state) of Chocó, which covers the northern half of the country's Pacific coastline.  Historically one of the poorest parts of this South American country, Chocó has benefited from growing tourist awareness of the charms of its western coastline and the unique culture and natural life to be found here.

The Cerros de Mavecure or Mavicure are three granite monoliths located in eastern Colombia, located in the Puinave indigenous reserve in the Department (state) of Guainía. According to local legend, a local princess climbed all three hills in a mad daze after she was drugged with an overly strong love potion. Check out this amazing drone video of an ancient ruins site in South America known as the "Stonehenge of Colombia".  El Infiernito is located near Villa de Leyva, a town in the Boyacá Department northeast of Bogota.  The name ("Little Hell") derives from the Spanish explorers who conquered the area (although they didn't discover this site) who thought that there were diabolical pagan rituals afoot here.  It's believed that the site was used for ritual bathing as well as rudimentary astronomical observation.

Colombia has some of the most remote wilderness areas of the Western Hemisphere, which explains why, even now, the country periodically announces new "discoveries". In this drone video by contributor la.drones, you'll get an aerial view of one of these recent finds: a series of rock paintings deep in the jungles of the Guaviare Department, in the south-central part of the country. These paintings (which may be 20k years old) had been "hidden" from the rest of the world for eons.  This video was a DVOW finalist in September, 2019.

For a first upload to AirVuz, brand-new contributor parrarotten brings us this excellent drone video of the city of Chiquinquirá, Colombia.  Chiquinquirá is located in Western Boyacá, a department (province or state) in the east-central part of the country.  It's situated in a valley of the Andes about 70 mi. (around 115 km) north of Bogota, at an elevation of about 8.4k ft. above sea level or around 2.55k meters.  Its basilica, prominently featured in the video, is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá.

Tayrona Park is one of the natural treasures of Colombia.  It lies on the country's Caribbean Sea coastline within the city of Santa Marta in the Magdalena Department.  the park is somewhat unique in that it includes not only spectacular Caribbean landscapes but also the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, one of the world's highest coastal mountain ranges.  Contributor jm_photography created this beautiful aerial tour of the park, which covers an area of about 150 square km (around 58 square mi.).

While Colombia didn't see its first confirmed Covid-19 infection until the second week of March, 2020, the country was fairly quick to adopt strict social distancing  measures to combat the spread of the deadly virus.  President Iván Duque declared a National Emergency on March 17, and a nationwide quarantine on March 21.  In this excellent drone video by jm_photography, you'll see the town of Envigado under a near-lockdown during this challenging time.  Envigado is situated southeast of Medellin, in the Antioquia Department.

Check out this drone video from northeastern Colombia, compliments of contributor Los Manes del Drone.  The video was filmed in the city of Cúcuta the capital of the Norte de Santander Department.  With a population of around 700k, Cúcuta is one of Colombia's half-dozen largest cities.  It was the site of one of the most important battles in the early 19th century wars through which the Spanish colonies of South America became independent, and a few years later it hosted Colombia's constitutional convention.

One of the most well-known landmarks of the Colombian city of Cali is the Christ the King (Cristo Rey) statue atop a hill overlooking the city.  It's located in the town of Los Andes, which is situated just to the west of Colombia's third-largest city and the largest in the western part of the country.  Standing 26 meters (around 85 ft.), the statue was completed in 1953.  Seen here in this drone video by la.drones, the statue was erected to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the civil conflict known as the War of a Thousand Days.

For a first upload to AirVuz, brand-new contributor SERTBAS brings us this excellent drone video of a mid-sized city in the giant South American country of Colombia.  The city of Tunja is the capital of the department (state or province) of Boyacá, near the geographic center of the country.  The city lies on the Cordillera Oriental, the easternmost (and widest) of the three branches of the Andes Mountains which run on roughly north-south axes through the country.    Tunja is notable for its Colonial era architecture.

AirVuz contributor skypicture brings us this drone video from a city in Colombia during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.  Fusagasugá is a town in the Cundinamarca Department, near the middle of this giant South American country.  Located only about 60 km (around 35 mi.) from the national capital city of Bogotá, Fusagasugá lies in a valley between the Cuja and Panches Rivers in the Andes Mountains.  While Colombia was initially spared the worse of the pandemic, by mid-July its confirmed case count put it in the top 20 countries worldwide.

Colombia's Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is one of the world's tallest coastal mountain ranges.  Not part of the Andes range, these mountains reach a peak altitude of 5.7k meters above sea level (18.7k ft.) just 42 km (26 mi.) from the country's Caribbean Sea coastline.  With mountains that close, it makes for some incredible looking beaches.  As an example, check out this drone video of the beaches of Buritaca, compliments of AirVuz contributor Drone Travels.  The beach is about an hour's drive east of the city of Santa Marta.

Here's a nice aerial view of a seaside city in northern Colombia called Riohacha, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot Drone Travels.  Riohacha is the capital of the La Guajira Department, which covers roughly the eastern third of Colombia's Caribbean Sea coastline.  A mid-sized port city, it's situated at the mouth of the Ranchería River, Because it's located in the "rain shadow" of the coastal Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range, Riohacha is a desert environment despite being located on the Caribbean.

Here's a beautiful drone video of a well-known beach in Colombia's Caribbean region, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot Drone Travels.  It's called Playa Granda, and it's located near the fishing village of Taganga in Magdalena, one of the main departments (states) of this giant South American country.  The beach is located near the tip of a broad peninsula east of city of Barranquilla, most of which is covered by the coastal mountain range known as the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

Contributor and pilot Stefranceschi used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this amazing aerial view of the Colombian capital city Bogota as well as the nearby town of Guatavita.  Bogota highlights include shots of the Barrio La Colina and the Estadio Nemesio Camacho.  The latter is the main football (soccer) stadium in the Colombian capital city.  Completed in 1938, in current configuration it seats just over 36k spectators.   The stadium is home to the Independiente Santa Fe and Millonarios teams.

Some of Colombia's most beautiful landscapes are in the valleys formed by the three sub-ranges of the Andes Mountains which run through this giant South american  country on a roughly north-south axis.  In this drone video by contributor and pilot jm_photography, you'll get an aerial view of one of these areas.  The video was filmed around the town of San Pedro de los Milagros.  It's located near the center of the main part of the Department (state) of Antioquia, just north of the state capital (and Colombia's second-largest city) of Medellin.
