Apart from the corner of the country which is covered by the Carpathian Mountains, most of this giant land is covered by the great Eastern European Plain. This great flat expanse is interrupted by the great cities which dot this country of over 40 million, as well as areas of forests and lakes. Much of it though is under agricultural cultivation, giving rise to the Ukraine's nickname: the Breadbasket of Europe.
