Turf is peat soil which is suitable, after drying, to co-fire. As the peat soils were created between 1900 and 1950 many legakkers (strips of land on which the peat was laid to dry). The peat was used as a fuel. After the cessation of peat extraction by the rise of oil and natural gas as fuel, there are three or four hundred legakkers remaining on the Vinkeveen lakes.
