Canada's largest province by area, Quebec covers an immense land mass of about 527k square mi. (a bit under 1.4k square km), larger than the area of Western Europe. Of this territory, roughly 55% is covered by forest. Quebec is increasingly challenged to balance the preservation of this resource against the demands of the forestry industry, which supports tens of thousands of jobs in the province.

In Quebec, forests are at the heart of a complex economic and environmental issue. In some regions, many jobs depend on the forestry industry; at the same time, however, that industry is taking a heavy toll on our natural heritage, clear-cutting vast areas of land. Faced with the scale of deforestation and the damage it causes, citizen groups are working to preserve parts of this territory. I shot and edited this short film for friends who are trying to protect a forest not far from the city where I live, where some of the trees are more than 400 years old. It is not an equal fight, but I want to hope that showing even a little of this extraordinary beauty will inspire others to find the desire and the courage to act to preserve it.
