Recently, during a long range mountain surfing mission on a cold cloudy morining (it was snowing during the flight) I made this close encounter with an alpine ibex. The animal was standing proudly on the promontory of a ridge, looking downstream, just like in a Myazaki movie. I hoovered nearby for a while, the animal seemed curious and not afraid, allowing me to apporach him safely. A few minutes after the meeting, when I descended the same ridge, the ibex was still there (you can see it at 1:05) proving again that he wasn't scared at all! I showed the footage to a forest ranger I know and he explained me some very interesting things I didn't know about ibex. First of all they are bovids (unlike deers, which are ungulates), so they're basically relatives of goats and cows. Therefore their antlers are permanent, abex never lose it. Thus, precisely on the basis of the horns, he was able to establish that this very ibex I met is a male, an old specimen (the enlargement of the two horns is a sign of old age). Even more he explained to me that normally these animals do not populate the area where I was flying and that in all probability this specimen had detached from the herd to end his life in solitude, far from his fellows, as ibex do.
