The drone community has been awaiting the latest product announcement from DJI, and the day is finally here. Dubbing it the “marvel of modern engineering,” DJI just unveiled the new Mavic 2 Line – the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom. The latest iteration follows up the success of the wildly popular DJI Mavic Pro, which the company introduced nearly two years ago. In a live-streamed release, DJI said consumers wanted 3 main things – a more versatile camera, improved obstacle avoidance, and longer battery life. They say the Mavic 2 line is just that, “better, faster, quieter” than consumer level drones of its size have ever been. The biggest and most challenging feature of the Mavic 2 is its improved camera. The Pro comes with a Hasselblad camera with a 1-inch sensor, almost twice the size of the sensor on the original Mavic. DJI says the new camera allows for better image quality at sunrise and sunset, and access to the color science developments of Hasselbad Cameras, giving the user more dynamic range and color grading abilities. The Zoom has just that, a zoom lens. DJI says it is the first foldable drone that offers optical zoom. The camera on the Mavic 2 Zoom has both a two-times optical zoom and two-times digital zoom, opening the possibilities even more for aerial filmmakers. The new “Dolly Zoom” is the new QuickShot for the Mavic 2 Zoom. Another exciting new feature is the Hyperlapse – created in the drone’s onboard processor. As DJI said, “it does it on the fly.” In addition to the upgraded cameras is longer flight times. The Mavic 2 Pro boasts 31 minutes, up from around 27 minutes with the original Mavic Pro. The Mavic 2 Pro has a max speed of 44 miles per hour, quieter propellers and motors than the original Mavic, something DJI improved slight with the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum edition. They say these are some of the quietest they’ve ever created. The Mavic 2 has the most advanced live-views system of any DJI drone. With the OcuSync 2.0 the Mavic 2 has the most reliable transmission system they say they’ve ever developed. It allows for 1080p resolution up to 5 miles away, streams original resolution photos to your phone, and has 8 gigs of onboard storage. One other feature of the new Mavic 2: extra sensors for increased obstacle avoidance and a downward facing LED light to help with landing. DJI calls it the “smartest, safest drone yet.” The final perk of this new drone? No waiting! You can purchase yours immediately on DJI.com and at DJI retailers. The Mavic 2 Pro will cost you $1449, while the Zoom goes for $1249.
