Modern technology meets ancient human history! Archaeologists in the Middle East have found a way to incorporate their drones into their work and have discovered something new beneath the Jordan desert.

One of the newest applications for drones comes to us from the world of ancient human history. That’s right, thanks to drones, archaeologists are now able to discover old artifacts with some new technology. Here’s Tyler Mason with the story.
By definition, archaeologists spend their careers searching for clues to humanity’s history. Now, with the help of drone footage, those scientists are able to see those clues from a brand new perspective… It’s allowing them to uncover more secrets from our past. A group of scientists made a recent discovery in the ancient city of Petra.
The city of Petra, Jordan, is known for its intricate ruins and ties to ancient civilization. It has been the sight for archaeological research for many centuries, but recent use of drones has brought the research to a whole new level.
Drone footage has brought on the newest set of discoveries: a huge man-made stone platform beneath the desert sand. The platform was not visible from the ground or surrounding hills due to how massive it was. Drones and other satellite images provided the perfect opportunity to see these ruins. A lead researcher with the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, says the platform could have been used for ceremonial purposes- based on its design and location.
The researcher says because the platform was so huge- they were walking on it, without realizing it was even there. It wasn't until they had the aerial perspective where they could see it’s outline.
To learn more about it- they say excavations are needed, but for now, there aren’t any planned.
