The abbey of Santa Maria Assunta or the abbey of Monteveglio is a place of worship located in Monteveglio, built on the wishes of Matilde di Canossa as a sign of thanksgiving for the victory over Emperor Henry IV. The Romanesque abbey was built adjacent to a pre-existing 5th century church. In 1455, it was entrusted to the Laternan Canons of San Giovanni in Monte di Bologna, replacing the previous religious order: the Augustinians of San Frediano di Lucca. The abbey is now held by the Franciscans of the order of the Brothers of San Francesco
