Aerial Video Of Freeriding In The Polar Circle

Published 04/24/2019 09:09

Above the polar circle in the northwest region of Russia, freeride skiers took to the mountains for an extreme sport competition and a drone pilot was there to capture all the action. Freeriding is a style of skiing and snowboarding that is quickly gaining popularity across the globe.

Athletes race down mountains through natural off-piste terrain, including deep powder snow and steep cliffs. The areas used for these races are unmarked, un-groomed and un-patrolled. Freeriders are responsible for their own safety and are exposed to avalanche risks and other hazards like trees, cliffs, crevasses and rocks.

Drone pilot 'Rocannon' documented the racers competing in the 2019 Khibiny Open Cup in the mountains near Kirovsk, Russia from above. The Khibiny mountains are not particularly high but are known for strong winds, low temperatures, sudden weather changes, and considerable avalanche danger. The drone video shows the beauty and threat of the untouched mountain landscape.

The winners from this event qualified to be some of the 50 riders to compete in one of the five Freeride World Tour events.

Freeriding in the Khibiny region lasts from December to May. Adventurers looking to try the sport can hire local guides to organize a trip.
