AirVuz News: World of Drones 12/14/20

Published 12/14/2020 10:22

Welcome to the “World of Drones,” your weekly new source on all things drone related.

Drones have saved over 500 human lives, according to DJI’s Drone Rescue Map. The most recent reported rescue was in October when a 93-year-old woman went missing during a walk in a dark field in Missouri. The Cass County Sheriff’s office used their DJI Matrice with a thermal imaging camera and found the woman within 5 minutes of taking off. DJI started this project in 2017 after publishing a paper called “Lives Saved: A Survey of Drones in Action” in response to all the bad press drone technology was getting in the media. DJI’s research discovered that drones saved nearly 1 life per week. That project has since evolved into the DJI Drone Rescue Map which anyone can view to explore drone rescues from all around the world.

For those that can’t wait until it is officially released, we’ve got another leaked photo of the brand new DJI FPV drone. This may be the clearest photo we’ve seen yet and it comes from the twitter account @OsitaLV who has previously leaked many photos of DJI drones before they were released. A few of the confirmed specs we have for the new DJI FPV Drone is that it will have a 4K60fps camera, a flight time of 21 minutes and GPS Return-to-Home functionality. The entire DJI FPV Drone Combo is expected to cost $1500 USD and is rumored to be released on January 8th, 2021.

A team of researchers at the University of Washington has developed the Smellicopter: an autonomous drone that uses a live antenna from a moth to follow smells. Smellicopter also uses infrared sensors to avoid obstacles while tracking down a scent. Since it doesn’t require GPS technology, the Smellicotper is well-suited for indoor and underground missions. Some practical uses for the future would be discovering where a gas leak is coming from inside a building or finding unexploded ieds in a field.

Now let’s go over the Top 5 videos uploaded to AirVuz.com last week and crown one our ‘Drone Video of the Week’: ’ “Hong Kong For A Day” - panvelvet This video by Drone Video Award winner and  New York City Drone Film Festival award winner, panvelvet, is a well-produced masterpiece that captures a busy, bustling day in Hong Kong.
