AirVūz News: World of Drones 09/14/20

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :

Another major company is getting into the drone delivery game. Not long after Amazon was granted a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration for drone delivery, retail giant Walmart announced it is testing out deliveries via drone.

Last week, Walmart partnered with a company called Flytrex for a pilot program aimed at delivering groceries and household essentials. Currently, the program is only being tested in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Walmart senior vice president Tom Ward said it “still feels like a bit of science fiction,” and acknowledges that it will take time before the company is using drones on a regular basis.

Drone manufacturer DJI announced new security features last week for its popular line of drones. DJI says it will include the Local Data Mode feature in its DJI Go 4 and DJI Fly apps used with many of its drones. This means pilots will have the option to prevent sharing their data externally.

The announcement comes amid security concerns involving DJI’s drones, especially as it pertains to the usage of the drones by the U.S. government. DJI was not included as one of the five drones recently approved for use by the U.S. government. The company says this new feature will help to protect potentially sensitive information captured via DJI drones.

Drone videos are emerging that showcase the orange skies of California after recent wildfires. The San Francisco Area was filled with a colorful sky due to smoke caused by the fires. Pilot Avery Bazan used a drone to film the iconic Bay Bridge as well as San Francisco’s skyline. The sky looked even more red in a video by another pilot, DoctorSbaisto, who also filmed San Francisco’s downtown area under a hazy sky.

As wildfires continue to ravage America’s West Coast, it’s important to remember not to fly drones in any wildfire areas without authorization as any unauthorized flights can end up doing more harm than good.

As we do every week on “World of Drones,” we showcase the top five videos uploaded to AirVuz.com in the last week. So here are this week’s top five:
