A sunny spring Lake District weekend, blue skies over an abandoned quarry filled with clear, still water, and a couple of drones needing some exercise - well, what else were we supposed to do!

An interesting drive to reach Hodge Close, but undoubtedly worth the effort, we set off at 700am. We arrived just after 9am, a circuit of the quarry on foot first to stretch the legs, then time to fly the AVATA2 and AIR3, and to capture something spectacular - the still water giving amazing reflections that looked like the doorway to another world - hence the title!

Drones - 'Monster Midge' - DJI AIR3 + 'Ghost Midge' - DJI AVATA2

Edited using - DaVinci Resolve 19

Music - Albion Drones - Echoes (Cover) - https://www.riffusion.com/song/d96c64a1-4710-487d-9976-c7c2fb2aac47

Hodge Close Quarry

The slopes of Holme Fell include the massive disused green slate quarry at Hodge Close, located at NY317017. The quarry closed just before the start of the Second World War. It has flooded chambers and tunnels which are used by cave divers for sport, but it is a dangerous location and several divers have died over the years, after becoming lost in the murky waters of the tunnels. The quarry is also used by rock climbers and offers some excellent Extreme routes such as ‘First Night Nerves’ and ‘Wicked Willie’.
