Feast your eyes by mixing nature and a charming village
A relaxing and slightly sporty 10 km round trip hike to discover a path like no other between freshness and nature
The walk begins in Bouziès, a small village in the heart of the Lot Valley between Cahors and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. The arrival in the village is quite unusual, because you cross a suspension bridge that overlooks the Lot River, one car at a time so be careful.
A car park is available to leave your car there for the duration of your walk. Before leaving the car park, look up, you will see the ruins of a troglodyte castle, the Château des Anglais, beautifully nestled in the rock.Limestone cliffsOn leaving the car park, along the Lot, you pass under an old abandoned metal bridge before entering a somewhat dense forest on a dirt road. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful and the landscape will quickly change as you leave this wooded area. Very quickly the cliffs of Ganil appear, you feel very small next to its limestone walls.
Depending on the season you can admire caterpillars that let themselves hang from their thread to create their cocoon, it is quite amusing and impressive to see. Herons can also keep you company.A path cut into the rock
As you continue on your way, you discover that the hand of man has passed by here.
This part is certainly the prettiest of the towpath, you enter as if in a tunnel and can admire that the stone is sculpted over about 300 meters by Daniel Monnier. It is quite surprising to see this work here, in the middle of nature, discreetly hidden in the rock, it is only by passing by that you can admire it.
Artist sculptureDaniel Monnier is a sculptor from Toulouse who created this work from 1985 to 1989. It took about 4 years of work to give free rein to his imagination and represent the life of the Lot River and its environment. As a little anecdote, he dreamed of creating a work in the middle of nature, so he himself applied for permission from the authorities, who had initially only granted him 2m2. Finally, this bas-relief extends over 40m2 for the greatest pleasure of the eyes.Heading for Saint-Cirq-Lapopie
At the end of the towpath, the Ganil lock allows boats to continue their journey to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, but for you, nothing could be simpler, just follow the markings. Impossible to get lost! The walk continues towards the village.
You have to take the time to make a few photo stops, because the landscapes pass by and are not alike, on one side the Lot and on the other the forest, the rock, the wheat fields, the flowers ... At least, the hike is not monotonous.A village classified as "Most Beautiful Village of France"
Once you reach the end of the path, you have to turn left to join the stairs that go up to the medieval village. The climb is steep with very dense vegetation, it buzzes, the butterflies fly, absolute silence during this escapade! Allow about 15 minutes to reach the top and be able to enter the village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie directly on the central square, the Place du Sombral.
All you have to do is stroll and enjoy this medieval village classified as "Most Beautiful Village of France" to recharge your batteries before turning around to get back to your car.A hike for everyone
Taking your time and with a few stops, it takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the village. No difficulty, a path perfectly adapted to all, very pleasant and there is no need to be sporty to do this hike. Good shoes and water will be your best allies to enjoy this magnificent landscape which is really worth the detour.
