The central feature of a bucket wheel excavator is the so-called bucket wheel, which rotates along a long, movable arm. This wheel is equipped with multiple buckets that scoop up material and transfer it to a conveyor belt, which then transports the excavated material further. Bucket wheel excavators are particularly important in large open-pit mines and for the extraction of resources like coal, ores, and sand, as they can efficiently move vast amounts of material.

The bucket wheel excavator SRS 1300, manufactured by TAKRAF, is a large-scale machine used in lignite mining. It has been employed in open-pit mines such as Jänschwalde, where it extracts both overburden and lignite. This model can handle up to 3,500 cubic meters of material per hour and reach a maximum excavation height of 24 meters. It weighs approximately 1,645 tons and operates on 6 kV electricity.

Mining at the Profen open-pit mine began with its opening phase in 1941, and the extraction of upper coal seams commenced in 1944. The lower seams followed in 1951. The mine is divided into several subfields, including Schwerzau and Domsen, and is expected to remain active until around 2035. It produces an annual output of 9–10 million tons of lignite and 32–35 million tons of overburden.

Mining in the visible area of the Profen South subfield began in 1971. This subfield is one of three main mining areas, alongside Schwerzau and Domsen. The coal from this area is mainly supplied to power plants like Schkopau near Halle (Saale) and to industrial facilities in the region.
