Bulgaria Drone Minute - Devil's Bridge, Dyavolski most

Hi everyone, 

Today we're heading to the Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria, to a place called Dyavolski most — the Devil's Bridge.

This stone arch bridge was built between 1515 and 1518, right over the Arda River, on the remains of an even older Roman crossing. For centuries, it was part of a route connecting the Aegean coast to the Thracian plain, carrying merchants and travelers through this remote mountain gorge.

What makes this bridge so striking is how it sits in the landscape. A single tall arch rises from bank to bank, with two smaller arches built into the sides to let the river through when it floods. It's stood here for around five hundred years, surrounded by steep forested slopes, with the Arda River running beneath it.

As for the name, nobody really knows for certain how it got it. But like most old places in Bulgaria, it comes with its share of legends — stories passed down for generations about the builder and the bridge itself.

It's not the easiest place to reach, tucked away on rough mountain roads, but that's part of what makes it worth the trip. A quiet, atmospheric corner of the Rhodopes that feels like stepping back in time.
