Fly over two of the most overlooked corners of Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast - the ruined seaside fortress of Akra near Chernomorets, and the wild dunes of Arkutino inside the Ropotamo Nature Reserve. Both are quiet, hard to reach and barely known even to Bulgarians, and from the air they finally make sense.

Akra was an Early Byzantine fortress built in the late 5th century under the emperor Anastasius, guarding a small port town on the tip of Cape Akin. The town it protected is now underwater - you can still see the outlines of walls on the seabed - and above the surface only a single stone tower and scattered ruins remain, reached by a rough dirt track. A few kilometres down the coast, Arkutino is a stretch of undeveloped beach backed by the tallest sand dune in Bulgaria, rare sand lilies and a freshwater lagoon full of water lilies, wrapped in the jungle-like forest of the Ropotamo reserve.
