The Ukraine was the site of the worst disaster of the Atomic Energy Age.  In April, 1986, a malfunction in one of the light water reactors at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant caused the first Level 7 Event on the International Nuclear Event Scale, the only such event prior to the  Fukushima accident in 2011.  The near-meltdown caused catastrophic damage to the surrounding countryside.  In this video by Aerozond, you'll get an aerial view of the Exclusion Zone contaminated area.
