CORFU ISLAND GREECE

Visitors to the Greek Ionian Island of Corfu often remark on the similarities to parts of Italy, notably Venice.  There is a good historical reason for that; for over four centuries, strategically situated Corfu was the jewel in the crown of the Venetian Empire.  The fortress-island withstood two epic sieges by the Ottoman Empire in 1537 and 1716, in both cases rallying large pan-European interest in keeping the island out of Muslim hands.  Check out historic Corfu from above in this drone video by gkoutanoudisg.
