The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission asked the community to come together for a candlelight vigil commemoration on Monday night. The community vigil took place on the streets of the city’s historic Greenwood District to honor the victims of the massacre. Starting at 10:30 p.m., streetlights will be dimmed, some businesses will have green lights and place candles, and music will be played from ONEOK Field. The moment commemorates the lives lost and the first shots fired on May 31, 1921. The vigil had been scheduled to cap the commission’s “Remember & Rise” event at ONEOK Field before its abrupt cancellation last week. Members of the commission say people will be able to take pictures and post their images on social media with the hashtags #TulsaTriumphs and #GreenwoodRising.
