Carhuaz, founded as San Pedro de Carhuaz (in Quechua Ancashino: Qarwash, ‘Yellow or gold’). This is a Peruvian city, capital of the district and province of the same name, located in the department of Ancash. It is located 34 km from Huaraz at 2688 meters above sea level. Near the city, there are the hot springs of Chancos (Marcará) and Anta airport. Its streets are similar to those of other cities in Callejón de Huaylas. From its main square, the snowy Hualcán is distinguished, whose peak reaches 6,126 m. The area, located on the right bank of the Santa River, has a moderate climate and an average temperature of 12-14 ºC. It is the third most populated and important urban agglomeration of Callejón de Huaylas after Huaraz and Caraz. Called by Antonio Raymondi as "Carhuaz Borrachera", for the celebrations in Honor of the Virgin of Las Mercedes that he could observe in his travels through the Callejón de Huaylas
