It's located near the eponymously named town in Guadalajara, one of the main provinces of the Castilla–La Mancha region of central Spain. Like many Spanish castles, the structure was built on an old Roman fortification. It played an important role in the titanic struggle between Muslim (Moorish) and Christian Spain, both before and after its capture by Christian forces in the late 11th century AD.
