El Castillo de Zambra se alza sobre un cerro rocoso en medio de campos de olivos, cerca de la aldea de Zambra, la antigua Cisimbrium romana, en el término municipal de Rute de la provincia de Córdoba. Se puede llegar por la carretera entre Lucena y Rute. El origen de Rute se remonta a la época islámica, cuando en el siglo XIII los árabes construyeron, sobre un pequeño núcleo visigodo, la fortaleza de Rute el Viejo, cerca del emplazamiento de la villa actual, para vigilar y defender esta zona fronteriza. Rute sufrió las vicisitudes propias de los pueblos fronterizos, cambiando de manos en numerosas ocasiones. En 1315 se apoderó de ella el infante Pedro, al servicio del rey Fernando III, quien la repobló de cristianos y la donó al concejo de Córdoba. En 1323 pasó nuevamente a manos árabes, quienes la mantuvieron hasta que en 1341 fuera recuperada por Alfonso XI. Nuevamente en manos árabes, en tiempos de Juan II, ya entrado el siglo XV, fue conquistada por Sánchez de Barrionuevo, quien la repobló con colonos de Segovia, pasando a depender del señorío de Ramiro Yáñez de Barrionuevo. En 1446 pasó a depender del condado de Cabra, y poco después al ducado de Sessa. Con el aumento de población, la difícil accesibilidad y la falta de espacio, la fortaleza de Rute el Viejo fue abandonada en 1433, trasladándose la población a su actual emplazamiento.
