Castle Herten

Herten Castle (Schloss Herten) is an important moated castle in the heart of the Rhineland region of western Germany.  It's situated in the eponymously named town in the state of North-Rhine Westphalia.  The original structure dates to the 14th century. It underwent substantial modifications in the early 1500s, and later that century it endured a two-year siege during Germany's Wars of Religion.  Lying in a ruined state for many years, it was restored in the 1970s and is now a protected monument.
