The Stonehaven War Memorial, designed by local architect John Ellis, is a large circular ruined Doric temple with eight pillars, raised on three high steps of rustic blocks.

It was built in 1922 and officially unveiled in 1923 to commemorate the men and women who lost their lives in the Great War of 1914-18. More names were added after the end of the Second World War - 1938-45. The memorial can be seen from most parts of Stonehaven and its surrounding areas, providing a permanent and daily reminder to local people of the supreme sacrifice of servicemen from Stonehaven.

The memorial is reached from the north by a path between fields that leads uphill from a layby on a sharp bend on the minor coastal road that leads from Dunnottar Castle into Stonehaven, and which has been made one way to counter slippage down the cliff.

The commemoration and names of the WWI dead are listed on a dressed grey granite stone with a pinkish hue which stands in the center of the paved enclosure which is entered into via a wide stair and wrought iron gate.
