It's situated in the Gascoyne Coast area, which is roughly in the middle of the coastline. With about 620 square km (around 240 square mi.) of land area, it's one of the largest islands on Australia's Indian Ocean coastline. Mostly covered in sand dunes, Dick Hartog Island is also known as an important conservation area for several species of sea turtles.
