Small theft of November 11, 2021 in the Roannaise region (Loire 42)

Dungeon of St Forgeux LespinasseThis keep was built on an artificial mound five or six meters high surrounded by ditches (the remains of which can still be seen). It was probably built in the 11th century on the site of a Roman camp. It was part of a set of important constructions intended for the inhabitants and guests of the castle.

It resembles the dungeons of Roanne and Couzan with its rectangular plan with rounded corners. Before being incorporated into a group of buildings, it was isolated in the middle of the enclosure. It was then the last place of resistance in the event of an attack. It was only entered via a flying bridge, via the first floor; the lower room had no communication with the outside; It was accessed by means of ladders opening into a trapdoor in the floor of the upper room.

This construction, seventeen meters high, and whose walls are one hundred and fifty centimeters thick at the base, seems to belong to the first half of the 12th century. The second, later floor could be due to a 15th century reconstruction. The opening of the ground floor, much later, can be attributed to the 17th century.Located in a private and fenced property.https://www.leroannais.com/patrimoine-culturel/donjon-de-lespinasse/
