One of the more amazing sights in the Baltic republic of Lithuania is Trakai Castle. It's built on an island in of Lake Galvė, which lies a bit to the west of the capital city Vilnius. The castle dates to the 14th century during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a state which ruled over a large section of Eastern Europe from the 13th to the 18th centuries. The lake lies an important location relative to Vilnius, and the castle was considered of vital strategic important to the defense of the Duchy.

Trakai Island Castle (Lithuanian: Trakų salos pilis) is an island castle located in Trakai, Lithuania on an island in Lake Galvė. The construction of the stone castle was begun in the 14th century by Kęstutis, and around 1409 major works were completed by his son Vytautas the Great, who died in this castle in 1430. Trakai was one of the main centres of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle held great strategic importance. MUSIC: River fire, by Kevin MacLeod
