In 2005 a part of Gran Canaria island was declared a Reserve of the Biosphere by UNESCO. The protected surface represents 46% of the insular territory. The pine forests cover around 70,000 ha, almost 60% of the entire forest area of the Canary Islands. Canarian pine is the only one that, due to its strong crust, can resist fire and regenerate after it. According to many studies carried out by different universities, Gran Canaria offers the best climatological conditions in the world.
