The Hachioji Castle ruins are what's left of a yamajiro (mountain castle) that was being built in the 1580s, west of Tokyo. That castle was attacked in 1590 and overrun in one day by two opposing armies working together against the castle builder and defender, Ujitera Hojo, who committed seppuku because of the defeat.
