Halstatt is one of the most iconic-looking towns in Austria, a country known in part for its beautiful alpine villages. The town lies on the shores of Halstatter See lake along the slopes of the Hoher Dachstein mountain masif, in the heart of the Salzkammergut resort district southeast of Salzburg. Known for its salt production going back to prehistoric times, Halstatt is now one of the top tourist destinations in the state of Upper Austria.
