IX Fort and Monument

One of the most important modern landmarks in the Lithuanian city of Kaunas is the Ninth Fort.  Seen here in this drone video by bailongas, the fortification was part of the Kaunas Fortress built in the late 19th century, when Lithuania was part of Imperial Russia and seen as an important defensive position for protecting the Empire's borders.  The fortification saw heavy fighting in World War I, and in World War II the Ninth Fortress was the sight of a notorious mass murder of Lithuanian Jews known as the Kaunas Massacre.
