the Po Delta is made up of the whole of the river branches and, by extension, of the territory between them, today's surface is about 18,000 hectares. According to this definition, the Po delta falls entirely in the Province of Rovigo or Polesine and occupies almost entirely the eastern portion (starting from the incile of the Po di Goro to the sea) and is also defined as "active delta". In a broader sense, it embraces the largest area of the historical delta, that is to say, the area between the ancient delta branches of the Po: once there existed important southern branches of the river, including the Po di Volano and the Po di Ferrara or Po di Primaro, it would include the part of the Province of Ferrara in the shape of a cusp between the vertices of Stellata, Sacca di Goro and Valli di Comacchio. The contemporary hydraulic structure of the Po delta confirms the more restrictive definition set out above, even if the coastal parts of the Province of Ferrara, in particular that between the mouth of the Po di Goro and Lido di Volano and the part including the Comacchio Valleys , they retain a typically delta - swampy landscape aspect. The Po delta was included in 1999 in the list of Italian UNESCO World Heritage Sites as an extension of the recognition conferred on the city of Ferrara in 1995.
