Located in a valley on the way to the Ishikari Plain, the Ishikari River is narrow and steep, and the deepest part of the river is said to reach a depth of 70m. There is a theory that it was the biggest obstacle for the Ainu people, who depended on water traffic, and that it was named Kamui Kotan because it often caused casualties or prayed to God for a safe passage. On the riverbank, there is the "Kamii Kotan Ouketsu Group" formed by erosion of the riverbed by pebbles, which is a natural monument designated by Asahikawa City.
