Kaposvár is an important region in southwestern Hungary. It's the capital of Somogy County, which is part of the historical region of Southern Transdanubia. The town dates to the 11th century AD, although the area was settled for thousands of years before then. It was under Ottoman control for over a century and then suffered severe depredations when the area came under Habsburg control. Largely spared from the fighting in World War II, the town has thrived in recent decades as a regional cultural center.
