Kelso Dunes – Aeolian Dreams | Mojave Desert

From the air, the Kelso Dunes rise like waves in the Mojave Desert.

But these towering dunes were not formed by water—they were built grain by grain by the wind over thousands of years.

Rising from the eastern Mojave Desert, the Kelso Dunes form one of the largest and most dynamic dune systems in North America. This short aerial film explores the geologic story behind these remarkable wind-built landscapes. The dunes began forming roughly 9,000 years ago after the last Ice Age, when ancient Mojave desert lakes receded and exposed vast dry lakebeds. Prevailing winds carried sand eastward across the basin until it encountered the wall of the Providence Mountains, where the grains accumulated and gradually built the towering dune field seen today.

Shot with a DJI Mavic 4 drone in Log-D, the aerial footage captures the sweeping ridges, star dunes, and ripple patterns that reveal the power of aeolian (wind-driven) processes. The camera glides above the central dune complex, where multi-directional winds sculpt towering star dunes, and along the ridges where sand continues its slow migration across the desert landscape.

The Kelso Dunes are far from static. Wind pushes sand up the dune crests, where it cascades down the slip faces, gradually moving the dunes forward. Even in this seemingly barren landscape, life leaves its mark in delicate tracks across the sand.
