The dam sits on the Haro River less than an hour's drive from Islamabad in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It was completed in 1983, following a 15 year construction period. The project supplies drinking water to the national capital city as well as to its "twin" city Rawalpindi. The reservoir's distinctive blue-green water has also led it to become a major tourist attraction,

Khanpur Dam is a dam located on the Haro River near Potowar Plateau in Tehsil Khanpur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. About 50 km from Islamabad. It forms Khanpur Lake, a reservoir which supplies drinking water to Islamabad and Rawalpindi and irrigation water to many of the agricultural and industrial areas surrounding the cities. It is 167 feet (51 m) high and has a water storing capacity of 79,980 acre feet. The dam was completed in 1983 after a 15-year construction period believed to have cost Rs 1,385.1 million.
